Maya Hawke Wears Classic Ballet Flats to ‘Wildcat’ Screening in NYC

Maya Hawke wore classic black leather ballet flats to a screening of her latest film “Wildcat” in New York City on Thursday.

She donned the same style during her performances with her band, Chaos Angel, at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Feb. 26. She also sported Dr. Martens Mary Janes for her appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that same week. For the Los Angeles premiere of “Maestro” in December, though, Hawke opted for a pair of elegant satin stiletto pumps.
“Wildcat,” directed by Maya’s father Ethan Hawke, is slated to release next month on May 3. The dramatic film in which Maya portrays American novelist Flannery O’Connor costars Laura Linney and Liam Neeson.

Hawke’s black leather ballet-inspired flats feature a rounded, somewhat square toe shape and a tie fastening. Unlike many ballet flats on the market, the bow detail isn’t affixed atop the toe but ties together at the vamp. A Brief History of Ballet Flats
Ballet flats have a centuries-long history, soaring in popularity in the late 1950s when they started appearing on the feet of celebrities like Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn, in particular, would become known for her signature black ballet flats, which she had custom-made by Salvatore Ferragamo. Bridgitte Bardot also contributed to the fame of the French ballet shoe company Repetto.
Ballerina-inspired flats remain a staple in many women’s wardrobes today. Brands renowned for their ballet flats include Chanel, French Sole, and Alaia. While their popularity waned a bit in the later 2010s, brands like Miu Miu and The Row have helped to make them a trendy style again in recent years. Moreover, ballet flats were all over the spring ’24 season runways at New York Fashion Week.
