Of all the things we expected to see on Matty Bovan’s autumn/winter 2018 runway, a string of customised Coach bags was definitely not on our radar.

Bovan is known for his joyful, colourful and slightly eccentric creations so, on paper, a collaboration with a more traditional luxury global design house seems slightly random. But IRL it all makes perfect sense.

Teaming up with fellow Yorkshireman and Coach’s Creative Director Stuart Vevers, the duo have created a collection of bags that are guaranteed to have millennials double tapping on Instagram.

Dubbed COACH x Matty Bovan, the collaboration features three bags in total - two versions of the Signature Riley bag plus one of the Signature Duffle bags.

On each bag Vevers has reimagined and reintroduced the iconic Coach signature logo print alongside adding a leather trim and new hardware whilst Bovan has then uniquely customised each one. Think hand-painted patterns and pearl roping detail.

“Ever since I was a teenager I have scribbled on my hands and schoolbooks, and with The Duffle style, I have hand-drawn symbols of eyes to really stand out against the Signature logo print, using bold white paint,” says Bovan.  “With two versions of The Riley style, I’ve pushed primary colour on one, painting onto the Signature logo print and encrusting it with pearls, whereas with the other, I’ve combined white free form hand painted lines with pearl embellishments.  I really wanted to tell stories with each bag, each having its own narrative.”

This isn’t the first time Bovan has worked with Vevers. In 2016 he showed customised Coach bags as part of his Fashion East debut with safety pins and jewellery made by his mother.  However, this is the first time they are available to purchase. Produced in limited edition and retailing exclusively at MatchesFashion.com and their London flagship store, 5 Carlos Place, from September 14th, the collaboration starts from £625.
