Matthew M. Williams Finds His Footing at Givenchy for Spring 2024
To say Matthew M. Williams' first few collections for Givenchy were a massive vibe shift from those of his predecessor would be an understatement. The designer brought a lot of the grunge of Alyx — the streetwear fanatic-beloved brand he co-founded, which earned him an LVMH Prize nomination — to the storied French house: sharp edges, revealing cutouts, lots of leather. It felt like a far cry from the haute couture of Clare Waight Keller, maybe a little closer to the edgy-but-commercial Riccardo Tisci era, but still unbalanced: too much Alyx, not much Givenchy.
When Carine Roitfeld came into the picture, it seemed like Williams' vision for the brand was beginning to find its footing. Givenchy recalibrated, focusing more on tailoring and separates imbued with femininity — and a little bit of that bite for which Williams is known. The proposition's only getting stronger: Fall 2023 suggested we might be sleeping on the potential in the designer's eveningwear. And the Spring 2024 collection, presented at the École Militaire on Thursday during Paris Fashion Week, is the softest, most delicate version of Givenchy we've seen in a minute.
Strong-shouldered blazers and coats cover up translucent slip dresses, midi skirts and draped blouses. (There's not a single trouser in the collection.) There's still a lot of black, but the color palette is punctuated with buttery yellows, minty greens, powdery blues and lilacs. There are even florals — not groundbreaking for spring, but certainly for a Matthew Williams collection. The gowns are once again a highlight: Two looks showcase the strength of the Givenchy atelier with their intricately beaded skirts, seen through a sheer overlay.
The Williams edge still comes through, primarily through styling, via knee-high stockings over heels and leather juxtaposed with chiffons. It's desirable and hits on Williams' hallmarks, but it could fit into a variety of different customers' lives, whether they're coming to the brand for him or not. One can imagine the outerwear appealing to professionals, the slips to the street-style crowd, the gowns to the hot Hollywood types that fill the brand's front rows. And the bags are always winners.
