It's a choice every parent has to make: when is my child old enough for social media? There's a general consensus around "too young for TikTok" and such, but it's not like there's one uniform age that's "old enough for the internet."

And sometimes, parents overreact or get overprotective. I, for one, vividly remember my father shouting, "Well, MySpace sure as hell isn't 'your space' while you're in this house," when he saw me making a profile. (He was somehow under the impression that it was a website for finding adult videos, as opposed to what it really was: a website where you sent a bunch of My Chemical Romance lyrics to a girl in the hopes that she'd want to go on a date to see Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and then get half-off apps at Applebees. But I digress.)

All that to say, it's tough to know when it's the right time to let your kid have a social media campaign. That's why it's no surprise that megastar Matthew McConaughey was hesitant to let his son join Instagram at a young age, reasonably waiting until he was... wait, does this say 15? The kid had to wait until he was 15 to have an Instagram? I mean... alright, alright, alright man. You do you, Matt.

According to news.com.au, the Oscar-winning actor and his wife Camila Alves celebrated son Levi's 15th birthday over the weekend by finally setting up an Instagram account for him. Apparently, it's something the young man had wanted for three years since all his friends were already on the social media site.

But only now did the McConaugheys think the young man was ready, and even then, one parent was more reticent than the other. In a video posted to Matthew McConaughey's 8 million followers, the celebrity couple announced the decision, with Matthew directly addressing his son and noting, "Hey, buddy, your mama's a little nervous today about one of the gifts we are giving you," about the Instagram account.

Speaking to Instagram at large regarding his son, McConaughey said, "I want to let all of you all know you're getting a very cool and respectful young man, Levi McConaughey, coming at you, and I hope you can all do your best to treat him the same way."

Of course, one might argue that a 12- or 13-year-old celebrity kid with a private and relatively anonymous Instagram account might be better off in terms of internet safety than a 15-year-old who just had his social media existence formally announced to 8 million people, but hey, every parent gets to make that decision for themselves, right?
