Break out the calculators? One couple’s idea of a fun wedding activity will involve numbers and figures—and we don’t just mean balancing out the wedding budget. Reddit recently caught wind of one bride-to-be’s post to Facebook about how she and her fellow mathematician fiancé plan to incorporate their love for math into their big day, and the public has opinions.

“Since both [redacted] and I are mathematicians, our wedding (which is coming up so soon!) will be perfused with mathematical tidbits,” the bride wrote. “For example, at dinner, guests will be required to answer a mathematical question in order to find out where they sit.”

“Every guest/couple will be presented with a unique, bespoke question: its difficulty and subject matter drawn directly from what we know their mathematical background to be.”

However, she emphasized why it was important to the pair to incorporate math into their wedding, specifically because so many of their guests are mathematicians as well. She also noted that they would likely enjoy the unique challenge considering many of the guests have a “research-level” math background, and so the equations could potentially be pulled directly from their own thesis or research papers.

“It’s been a rather consuming, but very entertaining process to look at all kinds of papers that I wouldn’t normally ever look at,” she continue. “Like, for example, set theory!”

While many Reddit users balked at the idea of having to do math at a wedding in order to get served their filet mignon, others found the concept refreshing and even potentially fun.

“While it’s true that this could end up a disaster, on the surface it’s kinda cute and adorable,” one commenter wrote. “Suggests a small intimate party and they’ve paid attention to each guest.”

Added another commenter, “I think it’s very cute actually. Nerdy, but cute.”
