Mary Lou Retton had an extra-thankful Thanksgiving this year.

The legendary Olympic gymnast, who spent the majority of October battling pneumonia in a Texas ICU, shared an emotional message of thanks on social media last week.

“My heart is overflowing with profound gratitude,” Retton wrote alongside a slideshow of family photos. “I want to express how truly blessed and thankful I am to be slowly improving and to be home with my girls, especially after my time in the hospital.”

Retton’s second-oldest daughter, McKenna Kelley, was the first to reveal that the 55-year-old was fighting a “very rare” form of pneumonia and was “unable to breathe on her own” via an Instagram story on October 10. Retton’s oldest daughter, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, kept fans updated over the following weeks as the matriarch’s health struggles continued. After experiencing a “pretty scary setback,” the beloved gymnast was finally sent home on October 24.

“The love and support of my four amazing daughters have been a source of strength and inspiration throughout my journey,” Retton wrote. “Their presence in my life is a testament to the incredible bonds of family. My extended family, all of you, have shown me immeasurable kindness, offering prayers, encouragement, and unwavering support during my challenging times. Your love has been a beacon of hope in my life.”

Born in Fairmont, West Virginia, Retton was just 16 years old when she became the first American woman to win the all-around title at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. A Houston resident since the 80s, Retton shares daughters Shayla, McKenna, Skyla, and Emma with her ex-husband, retired Texas Longhorns quarterback Shannon Kelley.

“On this day of giving thanks, I am reminded of the preciousness of life, the love that surrounds me, and the resilience of the human spirit,” her post continued. “Each one of you has played a significant role in my journey, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”

“Happy Thanksgiving to you all,” Retton concluded. “May this day be a reflection of the love, togetherness, and gratitude that fills our hearts.”
