Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy Are Reportedly Divorcing for This Reason

As you probably know, Mary-Kate Olsen has filed for divorce from Olivier Sarkozy after four and a half years of marriage. Now there’s a bit more info about what went down between the 33-year-old actor turned fashion mogul and the 50-year-old French banker.

According to multiple sources who spoke to People, Olsen has changed her position on children and wanted to start a family of her own with Sarkozy, who already has two children with his ex-wife, Charlotte Bernard. “A few years ago, having a baby was not a priority for her. This has changed,” says one source.

Sarkozy, on the other hand, doesn’t want more, a source in the fashion world also told the publication: “Mary-Kate thought he would budge on that and he hasn’t.”

According to yet another source from the banking world, the idea of having children wasn’t the only topic coming between the couple. “Olivier is a party boy and a big spender,” the source told People. “He loves the high life.”

This apparently did not match Olsen’s “more reclusive” personality. “Mary-Kate prefers to be quiet and alone and doing the things she likes,” a fashion source said. “She’s not that interested in socializing—she likes small gatherings with select people. They ended up being apart quite a bit.” Olsen currently runs two major fashion brands, The Row and Elizabeth and James, with her twin and former costar, Ashley Olsen.

Mary-Kate Olsen’s preference for smaller gatherings lines up with the pair’s nuptials back in 2015, which went viral at the time due to a, erm, vivid description by Page Six. The newlyweds reportedly hosted about 50 guests at a reception in a private Manhattan residence; cocktails were served in the rear garden before dinner indoors. “Party decor consisted of bowls and bowls filled with cigarettes, and everyone smoked the whole night,” a source told the publication at the time. Not much else is known, as guests were required to hand over their phones upon entering. We do know her massive engagement ring was a four-carat vintage Cartier piece from Sotheby’s.

According to TMZ, Olsen signed a petition for an emergency divorce on April 17, which was ultimately rejected by a New York judge due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We are only accepting essential/emergency matters for filing. The original filing was rejected by the New York County Clerk because they did not follow the essential-matter procedure,” New York courts spokesman Lucian Chalfen told People. “They refiled under the essential-matter procedure and the matter was referred to the ex parte judge, a New York State Supreme Judge. He decided that it is not essential so they can’t file anything at this point.”
