Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark, Breaks Convention With a Pair of Sporty Sneakers

The Princess of Denmark swapped her usual elegant heels for a pair of Nike kicks.

It’s undeniable that strict royal protocol—at least when it comes to fashion—is softening. With a new wave of family members such as Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, time-honored style rules have been twisted and updated, with duchesses and princesses now favoring more modern pieces that still convey the elegance and refinement that is expected. One such case is Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark who, along with husband Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, stepped out in Rome today sporting a very unconventional pair of sporty sneakers.

Taking in the ruins, Princess Mary wore a custom white long-sleeved tweed dress by Danish designer Mark Kenly Domino Tan, which she paired with Nike’s white VaporMax Explorer low-tops. The style retails for $280, proving fashion fit for royalty comes at all costs. Fun fact: Princess Mary actually wore nude pumps earlier in the day while visiting the Quirinal Palace, but then swapped them out for sneakers for a day of exploring afterward. (Royals, they’re just like us). She further accessorized her pristine look with a wide white belt by Max Mara, gold jewelry, and sunglasses.
