It seems that Shang-Chi 2 isn't happening anytime soon.

While Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi—starring Simi Liu, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung and Meng'er Zhang—was praised by fans when released in 2021, there seems to be a halt in any type of production for its sequel.

Setting up an 'Ask Me Anything' session on Threads on July 6, Liu was quizzed by a fan on the status of the sequel, replying: "Was told it would follow [Avengers: The Kang Dynasty], but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control:( hope to have more concrete news to share soon."

At the time of writing, Kang Dynasty was set to arrive in cinemas on May of 2025, but has since been pushed to 2026. That means there's potential that Shang-Chi 2 hits theaters sometime in January or February before the Avengers film.

18 months ago, Liu also spoke about his hopes for the follow-up's storyline, telling Complex Canada: "I think just what Shaun decides to do with all this newfound power, you know? It kind of consumed his father, consumed Wenwu. I'm curious as to how someone much younger, much more inexperienced, would fare against the rings. Just this idea of all of a sudden being gifted something that's so powerful but also so dangerous."

He goes on, saying: "And then the other big question I have is, you know, in what way does Shaun fit in with the rest of the MCU? Who are you going to see? What kind of crazy team-ups? What kinda tie-ins, Easter eggs? I'm just as much in the dark as everyone else."

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige broached the subject of a second Shang-Chi adventure prior to that, too.

"The early reactions to the characters and to [Shang-Chi] itself gives me great hope that people will want to see more of these characters," he said.

"We certainly have many ideas of where to take them and where to put them. What's so fun, we know the movie's working when it's not just the title character that people ask about, but it is the co-stars or the supporting players that people ask about. And in this movie in particular, that's heartening because we think they're spectacular, and we think they have great potential in the future."

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is streaming on Disney+.
