Robert Downey Jr has appeared to have poured cold water on any chance of Iron Man returning to the MCU, as he recently said he's done "all I could" with the character.

The Marvel actor played Tony Stark/Iron Man in the cinematic universe for over 10 years before meeting his end in his very own Avengers: Endgame fingersnap.

Following the Black Widow cameo rumours turning out to be false and Marvel Studios' executive vice president Victoria Alonso saying last month that the studio doesn't "have any plans" to revive the character, Robert himself has weighed in on his Iron Man future, and it's looking pretty bleak.

"I’ve done all I could with that character and can do other things now," Robert told Hindustan Times.

"Now, being middle-aged, you start looking at the back nine and realize this is all part of the journey and things end.

"I am fortunate and eternally grateful to have wound up where I have."

He added: "I had an incredible 10-year run with Marvel which pushed me creatively. I now have tons more ambition to do things I haven't done before. Evolving is key—the worst thing you can do is get in your own way."

The comments follow Robert previously appearing to confirm his exit in Avengers: Endgame was indeed his last performance as the iron-clad superhero.

"That's all done," he told the SmartLess podcast. "As far as I'm concerned, I hung up my guns and I'm good to let it go."
