From Town & Country

On the heels of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's critical success, writer-producer-director Amy Sherman-Palladino is set to dive even deeper into the world of midcentury showmanship with Gypsy.

The movie will be based on the classic Broadway show, which was in turn based on the real-life origin story of burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee. The story follows Gypsy's mom, Mama Rose, as she catapults her daughter to fame.

The show has had one previous big-screen adaptation, back in 1962. The movie starred Natalie Wood and Rosalind Russell, and was both a critical and financial success, earning $11 million at the box office as well as three Oscar nominations.

Three years ago, another version of Gypsy was in the works. Rain Man director Barry Levinson had signed on to direct, and none other than Barbra Streisand was set to play Mama Rose. Both have since exited the project, leaving Sherman-Palladino free to recast the role as she sees fit.

Deadline, which first reported Sherman-Palladino's news, floated Can You Ever Forgive Me? star Melissa McCarthy as a possible replacement for Streisand. McCarthy and Sherman-Palladino worked together on Gilmore Girls, and Sherman-Palladino has a habit of re-hiring her actors. Still, McCarthy has yet to officially sign on.

Whatever direction Sherman-Palladino chooses to take it, Gypsy is surely in able hands. On the latest season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Sherman-Palladino expanded her candy-colored 1950s world into something just short of an actual musical, even managing to slip in a few choreographed numbers-a stunt she'll have to conquer with Gypsy.
