New Marvel Comics: X-Men ‘97, Jackpot, Black Cat, and Spooker-Man

X-Men 97 #1 cover

Welcome to the tail end of March, and another week of Marvel Comics releases. After a few weeks of an absurd number of new releases and new lines, Marvel seems to be slowing down this week, with only two new lines being introduced.

Before we get into those, though, let’s quickly go over a continuing series that are worth paying attention to, because it’s doing some very interesting things. The first is Edge of Spider-Verse, which this week is focused on Spooker-Man and the return of Cyborg Spider-Man, who was first introduced back in the ‘90s. The cover is incredible and the story sounds fantastic:

Welcome to Spider-High, the most dangerous high school on Earth. Gluemy Miller is the new kid, and things aren't looking good for him making it through his first year there with the villainous teachers actually trying to kill him. On the bright side, he may have a shot with the cute cheerleader, but who is the mysterious and deadly SPOOKER-MAN?! CYBORG SPIDER-MAN returns! The coolest Spider-Suit from the '90s has gone underused for TOO LONG! Don't miss the most kick-ass Spider-Character's star turn!

Now onto the new lines. The first is X-Men ‘97, a short prelude series to the animated series of the same name. It bridges the original animated series to the new series, and given it was created in collaboration with the series’ showrunners, it seems to be canon to both. It would have been nice if this came out before the series, but hey, it’s here now.

The other new line is Jackpot & Black Cat, the second outing of the recently debuted Jackpot — Mary Jane Watson’s new superhero persona. As the name suggests. She’ll be teaming up with Black Cat, a sometimes-villain very familiar to Spider-People, and apparently facing off against another classic Spider-Man villain. Sounds great!
