Aliens What If...? #1

Welcome to March, the holiest of months for Marvel because the first three letters of the month are the same as Marvel’s. Is that a thing? I honestly don’t know! But if Marvel March isn’t a thing, it definitely should be. If it isn’t, you certainly wouldn’t know it, because Marvel Comics is pumping out comics at a breakneck pace.

This week sees the introduction of a whopping seven new lines, across a wide range of topics. A big fan of X-Men? You’ve got two (or three, depending on how you count it) new lines celebrating it. Like Spider-Man? There’s a couple for you there, too. What if superhero stuff isn’t for you? That’s what Aliens is for. It’s a great week for new Marvel lines, so let’s dig into a couple.

The big draw, in my eyes, is Ultimate X-Men from Japanese artist Peach Momoko, who both wrote and illustrated the new series. Ultimate X-Men is set in an all-new universe that sees the X-Men reimagined with a background in Japanese mythology and culture. The art is gorgeous and the plot sounds wonderful — take a read for yourself:

Visionary creator PEACH MOMOKO (DEMON DAYS, STAR WARS) creates a new generation of X-Men for an all-new universe! Hisako Ichiki is a teenage girl who just wants to live a normal life - go to school, hang out with her friends, ignore the political strife broiling over after the events of ULTIMATE INVASION - but life has other plans for her. In Japan, urban legends have sprung to life and brought some unusual new powers with them…Meet Armor, Maystorm and a group of new Ultimate X-Men the likes of which you've never seen before!

We’ve got a few Spider-Folks this week too, with The Spectacular Spider-Men starting up with Peter Parker and Miles Morales taking center stage in their first new series together, as well as another Giant-Size issue with Giant-Size Spider-Gwen. On the X-Men side of things we’ve got Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace, and Weapon X-Men, both of which look absolutely great.

Finally, to round things out in the non-super stories, we’ve got Aliens: What If…? which this week asks the question of what if Carter Burke had lived instead of dying off-screen — later revealed to be impregnated by a chestburster in novelizations and deleted scenes. These kinds of What If…? stories, especially applied to classic IPs like Alien or Predator, have all been really interesting, so there’s no doubt this one will be the same.
