Marvel Chief Says This Character Could've Single-Handedly Taken Thanos Down
The cinematic release of Avengers: Endgame might be over, but fans are now experiencing the movie all over again at home, this time with bonus content including a deleted scene from the climactic battle, and a director's commentary which confirmed a fan theory about that goodbye between Captain America and the Winter Soldier.
And Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, has just confirmed another popular theory about Endgame. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Feige spoke about the role that Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) played in the movie's epic final battle sequence — and how it could have gone very differently.
"Wanda Maximoff, who is probably near the upper echelons of power — I contend she would have taken down Thanos if he hadn’t called the [army]," he said. "Right? It was done." Plenty of fans have been saying this all along; after all, Wanda's powers come from an Infinity Stone, just like Captain Marvel, one of the only other characters who was able to match Thanos blow-for-blow in Endgame. Additionally, Wanda demonstrated just how powerful she was in Infinity War, when she was able to repel Thanos while simultaneously destroying Vision's Mind Stone.
So it stands to reason that Wanda would have been able to single-handedly whoop Thanos into oblivion, had he not called in cover fire from above. However, the title of the movie was Avengers: Endgame, not Scarlet Witch: I'll Do It Myself, and so presumably the writers had to find a way to temporarily sideline her and bring in the other members of the team.
Feige went on to say how excited he is by the notion of Wanda teaming up with Stephen Strange in the Phase Four movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: "So her being the Scarlet Witch now, as Lizzie said on stage in a full sort of unabashed power-based [way], coming into the Doctor Strange movie, that is two heroes coming together in a fun way."
While Wanda's character and powers have been written fairly inconsistently since she was first introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron (her psychic abilities have barely been referenced since that movie, in favor of red CGI energy blasts), pairing her up with a master of sorcery might be a cool way for her to earn the "witch" part of her title. And then, of course, there is the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision; so Marvel Studios have plenty of opportunities to utilize one of their most powerful characters.
