Martin Scorsese Comforted Lily Gladstone After Her Oscars Loss in Touching Behind-the-Scenes Moment

Every year, the Academy Awards ceremony is filled with offstage moments that viewers at home don't see. This includes the many interactions between the countless Hollywood stars and creatives gathered for the show.

Lily Gladstone made history at the 2024 Oscars as the first Native American woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Gladstone, who grew up on the Blackfeet reservation in Montana, plays real-life Osage woman Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese's historical epic Killers of the Flower Moon.

Gladstone was up against some stiff competition at the Oscars, vying for the Best Actress trophy alongside Anatomy of a Fall's Sandra Hüller, Maestro's Carey Mulligan, Nyad's Annette Bening, and Poor Things' Emma Stone. While some faithful award-watchers predicted Gladstone would make history once again—and fulfill her high school superlative—by winning the Oscar, Emma Stone ultimately took home the top prize.

After the show was over, the film's director Martin Scorsese took a moment to console Gladstone following her loss. Video from the audience showed Scorsese speaking with the Siksikaitsitapi and Nimíipuu actress and seemingly offering words of encouragement before giving her a hug.

Photos from the event gave a closer look at the touching moment. By that point in the evening, Gladstone had whipped out star-shaped sunglasses to wear with her Gucci dress designed in collaboration with Indigenous artist Joe Big Mountain, who hails from the Mohawk, Cree, and Comanche nations.

Even though Gladstone didn't take home the Oscar for Killers of the Flower Moon, the breakout star is still booked and busy. She's set to play Native jazz singer Mildred Bailey in a forthcoming biopic and will reunite with Scorsese as he executive produces Reed Morano's next film The Memory Police. Given Gladstone's undeniable talent, it's unlikely the Oscars have seen the last of her.
