Marquette County Habitat for Humanity dedicates 110th home

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WJMN) – Marquette County Habitat for Humanity has officially dedicated their 110th home.

After putting in the required sweat equity hours, Danielle Narhi has officially become a homeowner of a Habitat for Humanity home.

“So the process has been long but it’s been really fun,” said Narhi. “So we got to do a lot of things that I’ve never done before. You know, lay floor trusses, drywall. My dad is a contractor, but that’s his thing. So doing it myself has definitely been different, but it’s been really fun, very educational. We’re very excited. My son and I have been trying to buy a house for a number of years now and it’s just been so hard with the market. So without habitat, I don’t think that we would be in a homeownership situation at all, or at least anytime soon. So this has been a wonderful opportunity.”

Family, friends, and members of the nonprofit gathered at the home in Negaunee where it was dedicated to the new owner. The long process of choosing a family and building the house started last year and finally came to an end Monday, May 6.

Although this home was just finished, Marquette County Habitat for Humanity is just getting started on more new homes.

“We are getting ready to break ground on two new houses in Ishpeming Township,” said Deanna Johnson, the Executive Director of Marquette County Habitat for Humanity. “We’ll probably have groundbreaking ceremonies yet this week. So we will be looking for a slew of more volunteers. We have one more house to dedicate yet, hopefully early summer. We’re just finishing that one up. So all kinds of exciting things happening. So, yeah, sign up to volunteer.”
