Marine Serre is making Hardcore Couture. This was the title of her Spring 2019 show, which was staged on an 800-foot bridge in the middle of Paris, with models who were mostly her friends (and included some of their very cute kids). It was in reference to her upstart business, which has flourished in just two short seasons, as well as her technique of using upcycled materials to created one-of-a-kind pieces. Without a doubt, Marine Serre is one of the most provocative designers at the moment and, perhaps more importantly, as Vogue Editor Mark Holgate wrote in his review of the “outstanding” collection, she is “grounded.” With Serre, what you see is what you get—and the same goes for her beautifully draped and tailored and wearable clothing too. She may be the industry’s latest darling and she may be rewriting the codes for how women want and need to dress today but, as she insists of her third collection specifically, “It’s about people around me who live . . . . Basically, they are normal people.”

Above, Serre opened up her studio doors to Vogue 24 hours ahead of her Spring 2019 show to shine a light on her technique, her undeniably cool vision, and her humble know-how.
