From Marilyn to J.Lo, See Our Favorite Golden Globes Gowns of All Time

These are some iconic dresses.

As the show that officially kicks off awards season, the Golden Globes is a momentous (not to mention, high-fashion) event. While we can't wait to see who takes home statues etc. etc., we're mostly excited to find out who wears what on the red carpet.

In celebration of the impending awards show (to air Jan. 6 on NBC at 8 p.m. ET), we took a look back at all of the Golden Globes gowns we love. From Marilyn Monroe's striking emerald sequined gown in 1962, to the caped Ralph Lauren Collection gown that landed Lupita Nyong'o on the fashion map in 2014, to Jennifer Lopez's marigold caped Giambattista Valli Couture masterpiece, see all of our favorites in the gallery now.

Margot Robbie, 2023

Margot Robbie's custom Chanel creation was girly, glam, and gorgeous. As a longtime Chanel ambassador, she arrived repping the storied French house and blended modern touches with a go-to Old Hollywood silhouette.

Emma D’Arcy, 2023

Emma D’Arcy brought androgynous fashion to the 2023 Globes. They also resurrected the '00s trend of pants and a skirt, making for a major moment on the red carpet.

Lily James, 2023

Nominated for her role on Pam & Tommy, Lily James's Atelier Versace gown took a cue from the color of the famed suits on Baywatch.

Julia Garner, 2023

Julia Garner took home a trophy for her work on Ozark, but she also kept 2022's Barbiecore trend alive in 2023 with a shimmering Gucci gown with layers and layers of feminine ruffles and delicate crystal straps.

Saoirse Ronan, 2018

In the wake of the Time's Up movement, the 2018 Golden Globes red carpet was full of black dresses and tuxes, as a visual push of support for the movement. It's fitting, then, that the night's Best Actress winner Ronan chose her Versace dress with strength in mind. "It's not about sex, it's about strength," her stylist Elizabeth Saltzman told British Vogue. "It's not about frivolity, it's about confidence, excellence, purity and support."

Nicole Kidman, 2018

To the surprise of no one, Kidman showed up ready to dazzle on the Golden Globes red carpet. Like the vast majority of actors and actresses on the red carpet that evening, she wore black in support of Time's Up. "I've been working, for two decades, to eradicate violence against women," she said. "It is so hard to be heard amongst all the noise, so I think right now we have a chance to be heard and that's why we're doing it. We're all doing it because we're asking to try and elicit change, and everyone will help and participate."

Viola Davis, 2017

At the 2017 Golden Globes, Davis brought sunshine to the red carpet in a Michael Kors Collection dress that landed her on pretty much every best dressed list. The fashion triumph paled though to what Davis achieved that evening — she wore this gown while taking home her first Golden Globe, for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'Fences.'

Lily Collins, 2017

There are few better opportunities to wear couture than a major awards show like the Golden Globes, and Collins is living proof. She wore a baby pink Zuhair Murad Haute Couture ball gown, looking every part the princess on the red carpet. Her styling duo Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn really outdid themselves with this one.

Naomi Campbell, 2017

Leave it to a supermodel to bring high fashion to the red carpet. Campbell wore a lilac Versace dress that featured intricate strips and panels. While the dress might be difficult for others to pull off, for Naomi Campbell, it was a cake walk.

Jennifer Lopez, 2016

J.Lo debuted a very different look at the 2016 Golden Globes, eschewing her usual scanty sartorial antics for a rather demure (yet, incredibly strong) marigold yellow caped Giambattista Valli Haute Couture masterpiece, styled with Harry Winston diamonds, Jimmy Choo shoes, and a clutch by Judith Leiber.

Lady Gaga, 2016

For her first-ever Globes, Lady Gaga marked the occasion with a stunning black velvet off-shoulder Versace design, complete with Neil Lane cuffs and Brian Atwood shoes, that had everyone likening her to Marilyn Monroe.

Cate Blanchett, 2016

Blanchett took a fashion risk when she chose a fringed Givenchy Haute Couture creation washed in the iciest shade of pink, and it paid off. She finished her look with Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

Amal Clooney, 2015

Mrs. Clooney's first Golden Globes appearance was definitely a memorable one—she styled her black one-shoulder Dior Haute Couture gown with white opera gloves (that George joked she had sewed herself) and Harry Winston drop earrings.

Julianne Moore, 2015

Moore made a memorable entrance at the 2015 Golden Globes in a Givenchy Haute Couture creation embellished with special finishes (sequins! feathers! embroidery!).

The Homeland star got people talking-not for her win-but for how amazing she looked on the red carpet less than one month after giving birth to son Cyrus. "I tried my dress on for the first time last night around 9 p.m.," Claire Danes said of her red Versace gown. "How could I refuse?"

Charlize Theron, 2012

Dazzling in a pink Dior couture gown with a plunging neckline and thigh-high slit, Charlize Theron accented her look with sparkling Cartier diamonds.
