If you need any more proof that the ‘90s have completely taken over the world of fashion, or at least street style—look no further than this photo of a young Mariah Carey. She may swim in gowns now, but it wasn’t always that way!
The songstress Instagrammed the throwback pic on Monday—because real divas exist on a level far above alliterative hashtag trends—showing Carey, age 24, hanging out in New York City in the summer of ‘94. (To give some perspective, this was just a few months before she released “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”)
Even though she was already really famous at the time, Carey looks super cool and effortless in a cropped tee, denim cut-offs, slept-in waves, and Wayfarers. Hers is pretty much the exact outfit every cool girl in New York was wearing this entire summer, more than 20 years later. Well, aside from the cheesy sneaker heels, though we’ll let those slide—because, again, this WAS in 1994.
But seriously: If we didn’t know any better, we wouldn’t be shocked to find out that baby Mimi was the newest member of Taylor Swift’s #girlsquad. Sure, the photo’s a bit grainy—but isn’t there a filter for that on VSCO or something?
