Mariah Carey’s Stage Debut of “All I Want For Christmas is You” Was Pure ’90s Style, Sans Santa Catsuit

If there’s one thing that’s more recognizable than Mariah Carey’s high-pitched “you!” in the chorus of her hit “All I Want For Christmas is You,” it’s her sexy red santa catsuit. Carey first wore the Mrs. Clause-gone-bad, white fluff-trimmed look on the cover of her 1994 Merry Christmas album and for subsequent performances of the iconic holiday jingle. But yesterday, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the song, Carey released some never-before-seen footage of her very first stage debut of “All I Want For Christmas is You,” and there was not a costume in sight. Instead, the video shows Carey singing the hit inside The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York wearing a black halter, sharp black trousers, a T-shirt, a skinny crystal-embellished belt, patent leather pointed-toe boots, and a high ponytail cinched up with a thick black scrunchie.

Carey shared the video not only to honor catchiest holiday tune in history but also to promote a new double album featuring unreleased recordings from that holiday concert at St. John the Divine. The song itself is timeless, but what was particularly striking about the video Carey shared is what she wore. This clip captures Carey before she became the blinged-out, fur-bedecked diva that she is today. All we want for Christmas? More ’90s-era Mimi style inspiration.
