Maria Bakalova's Trippy SAG Awards Gown Took 500 Hours to Make

Even in one of the most unpredictable awards seasons of all time (who knew accidental Zoom muting would make its way to an acceptance speech?), there was one thing we could count on: breakout style stars. This season, Maria Bakalova, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 2021 SAG Awards for her role in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, was one of them.

For the red carpet on Sunday night — which was more of a photoshoot if we're being honest — Bakalova wore a stunning Dior gown. The long-sleeve dress had an Alice in Wonderland-esque playfulness and featured a black and sheer checkered pattern from collar to train. On the skirt, bright red roses were sewn between the pattern and fastened to the waistband.

"This awards season has been fun and interesting," her stylist Jessica Paster tells InStyle via email. "Since the beginning of this long award season, Maria and I wanted to go romantic. When I saw this extraordinary Dior gown, I found the romance and edginess we were going for. I see this gown as more of an art piece. The details, the sense of humor, and the harlequin detail were just beautiful!"

If the final look feels a little trippy to you ... well, that's on purpose. "To create the check effect, the Dior atelier cut out each panel in one layer of nude tulle and two layers of black tulle. They then stitched each three-layer panel to tissue paper," Dior detailed in an email.

"Once the dress was finished, the petite mains sewed 400 organza roses by hand on the skirt. The entire process of creating this gown represents around 500 hours of work."

While this may be a memorable look, it isn't the last one we'll see from Bakalova this year. The actress will be hitting the Oscars red carpet on April 24th, with her first nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
