Margot Robbie Is Starring in the Next Pirates of the Caribbean Movie

Superstar Margot Robbie is set to sail the high seas with her next role — proving she has the range after appearances in Bombshell and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie will be the new star in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Robbie's chapter will give the films a female-fronted addition after Johnny Depp and his Captain Jack Sparrow have taken the spotlight since the first movie back in 2003. Robbie will reunite with her Birds of Prey screenwriter, Christina Hodson, for the new Disney project.

Entertainment Weekly adds that Robbie's film will be separate from a reboot announced last year. Like Disney did with Star Wars and Rogue One, Robbie's film will not be a spin-off, but a separate story set in the established Pirates of the Caribbean universe. Jerry Bruckheimer will produce the film, just like he's done with every installment of the series. EW describes the film as "female-fronted." Past movies have starred Keira Knightley, Penélope Cruz, Naomie Harris, and Kaya Scodelario.

THR notes that Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most lucrative film franchises of all time. The five films have grossed more than $4.5 billion, with the most recent installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales, premiering back in 2017. The industry paper adds that Disney has been trying to figure out a way to reinvigorate the series, since Dead Men Tell No Tales pulled in the second-lowest box office totals of the series. Robbie's film is still in the early stages of development, so there's no news yet on a premiere date or if any of the other actors from the films will make an appearance on her seafaring adventure.
