Margot Robbie Shares Update on Female-Led 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Spinoff
The actress gave the update in a new interview with 'Vanity Fair.'
Margot Robbie has an announcement for Pirates of the Caribbean fans, but it's not going to be the one you were hoping for.
Over two years after first announcing that a female-driven spinoff was in the works, Robbie revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that the project is no longer being developed.
"We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would've been really cool, but I guess they don't want to do it," she said.
People reached out to Disney for comment on the project's scrapping but have not heard back at the time of writing.
According to the publication, the franchise has raked in over $4.5 billion dollars since its inception in 2003, so nixing it seems like an odd move.
Earlier this year, Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer told The Times that they had two new scripts in the works, one of which involved Robbie and one that did not. It's not clear if the other film is still on the table, though Bruckheimer seemed to confirm at least one of them was moving forward in an interview with Comicbook.com over the summer.
