Margot Robbie Proves Feathers and Glitter Aren’t Just for Olympic Ice Skaters at the 2018 SAG Awards

Figure skating glitz meets red carpet glamour.

Much like Tonya Harding at the 1994 Olympics — an event recreated for the big screen in I, Tonya — Margot Robbie didn’t hold back when it came to her look for the 2018 SAG Awards. Her blush-colored Miu Miu dress featured a myriad of embellishments that ranged from feathers to metallic seed beads to glimmering pearls. Makeup artist Pati Dubroff even added a whisper of finely-milled silver glitter to Robbie’s camel-colored lids, but the pro insisted that figure skating was the furthest thing from her mind before the red carpet: “This might be one of the first days in a long time that I haven’t thought about Tonya — I just thought about Margot!” she laughed.

The face painter said the team behind the scenes (which included stylist Kate Young, hair pro Bryce Scarlett, and manicurist Tom Bachik) actually envisioned an elegant boudoir fit for an Old Hollywood screen siren when they developed the rather “ethereal” package. Reminiscent of a dressing gown, the designer ensemble called for rumpled waves, but Dubroff brought the glam factor by washing Chanel’s Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow in Flesh across the star’s lids. Then, she coated the top lashes with Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara in Purple to “makes the whites of her eyes brighter and their blue color really stand out.” Less harsh that black, Dubroff opted to bulk up bottom fringe with Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Noir Brun. “I used mascara instead of a lot of eyeliner or too much shadow,” she explained. The finishing touch: “a little splash of silver” to play off the detailing on the dress. After placing a tissue underneath Robbie’s eyes, she sprinkled Make Up For Ever Glitters in Silver 2 onto lids with a flat, synthetic brush and gently pressed the shimmery particles into place with her fingertip. “I didn’t want a heavy dose of glitter —I wanted it to be more of a delicate dusting,” Dubroff said.

For a windswept wash of color on cheeks, the pro reached for the brightest pink possible (Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Pink Explosion), but applied it with a fan brush for a natural flush that was the opposite of Harding’s signature stripes of blush. Instead of swiping lipstick straight from the tube, Dubroff pressed multiple layers of Chanel’s Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Rouge Angélique in with her fingertip and polished off the center of her pout with a dash of Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss in Noce Moscata. While Robbie’s arrival on the red carpet lacked the drama of Harding’s Lillehammer performance (during which her skate lace snapped), she certainly had no trouble stealing the spotlight.
