Margot Robbie’s Oscars 2024 Look is Shockingly Anti-Barbie

The most shocking look from the 2024 Oscars? Margot Robbie isn’t wearing a pink Barbiecore fit. We were all expecting another hot pink look after a long line of Barbie-inspired looks during the Barbie press tour. But instead, Robbie is wearing a black sequin number from Versace’s FW24 collection.

The Oscars are a huge night for celebrating the best movies of the year and Barbie has definitely established itself as one of the most popular films of 2023. Among other things, the film celebrates fashion that is unapologetically fun—so of course, Margot Robbie’s red carpet looks have been especially memorable throughout the Barbie press tour. Because of how high she’s set the bar, Margot Robbie’s Oscars 2024 Anti-Barbie look came as a complete 180 compared to her past pink looks.

Robbie’s Barbie looks are playful yet sophisticated, paying homage to a childhood icon in a refined way. Many of her looks are directly inspired by Barbie’s iconic fashion sense and the doll’s history of revolutionizing women’s style. While some of her most viral looks come from her Barbie era, the star has been on countless red carpets since the start of her career. Throughout the years, she’s starred in films like The Wolf of Wall Street, Suicide Squad, I, Tonya, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, and so many others. Which makes her a red carpet veteran at this point.

While Robbie has so many loved looks on her resume now, she hasn’t always earned praise on the red carpet. Her Chanel look at the 2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards wasn’t received well by fans and some even theorized that her less popular looks were her attempt to be taken more seriously as an actress.

Regardless of speculation, Robbie has given us incredible red carpet looks this past year and not even the internet trolls can dispute that.

1. Academy Awards (March 2024)

A black dress from Barbie star Margot Robbie at the 2024 Oscars was not on our bingo card. Rather than going for her iconic Barbiecore pink, Robbie wore a black sequin Versace dress. We were all expecting another doll-inspired look so this dramatic black dress comes as a huge shock.

2. Screen Actors Guild Awards (February 2024)

Margot Robbie’s 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards look was designed by Schiaparelli. The dress came from the fall 2020 collection, that was never actually made due to the pandemic. Instead, the collection was only seen through watercolor sketches drawn by designer Daniel Roseberry and later this dress was specially made for Robbie.

3. BAFTA Film Awards (February 2024)

To the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, Margot Robbie wore a custom Giorgio Armani Privé sequin dress. This Barbie inspired look incorporated Barbie’s signature pink as well as black sequins and black velvet gloves for a truly glamorous ensemble.

4. Critics Choice Awards (January 2024)

Margot Robbie wore a red off-the-shoulder Balmain dress to the 2024 Critics Choice Awards. While the Barbie star has mostly worn pink at recent red carpets, everyone was equally stunned by this red number.

5. Golden Globe Awards (January 2024)

One of her most iconic Barbie inspired looks to date, Margot Robbie wore custom Giorgio Armani Privé to the 2024 Golden Globes. The pink look is inspired by an actual Barbie doll, the 1977 Superstar Barbie.

6. Barbie Premiere (July 2023)

Margot Robbie wore a Schiaparelli dress to the world premiere of Barbie. Another Barbie-inspired look, Robbie channeled the 1960 Solo in the Spotlight Barbie. This stunning look will go down as one of her most famous Barbie red carpet looks as well as a fan favorite.

7. London Barbie Premiere (July 2023)

At the London premiere of Barbie, Margot Robbie wore a custom Vivienne Westwood gown. The look was inspired by the 1960 Enchanted Evening Barbie. Wearing this beautifully iconic dress, Robbie definitely had an enchanting evening.

8. Barbie Photo Call (July 2023)

Another beloved Barbie-inspired look, Margot Robbie wore Emilio Pucci to the Barbie photocall in Mexico. The outfit payed homage to the 1992 “Totally Hair” Barbie doll and Robbie’s long blonde hair was crimped for the occasion.

9. Barbie Press Conference (July 2023)

Margot Robbie wore Moschino Spring 2015 to the Barbie press conference in Seoul. Her look was inspired by the 1964 Sparkling Pink Barbie and featured a matching heart shaped purse and bow hat.

10. Seoul Barbie Premiere, Day (July 2023)

For the first part of this two-part look, Margot Robbie wore a retro inspired suit designed by Versace. The look was accessorized with a hat, a vintage phone (which is actually a clutch from Judith Leiber), and a mini Versace purse. Inspired by the “day” outfit of the 1985 Day to Night Barbie, Robbie’s look was a nod to Barbie’s revolutionary advocacy for women in the workplace.

11. Seoul Barbie Premiere, Night (July 2023)

For the night look, Margot Robbie wore a dazzling sparkly dress also designed by Versace. She carried the same Versace mini purse and paired it with pink open-toe shoes to take on the night.

12. Met Gala (May 2023)

Margot Robbie wore a Chanel dress for the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” themed Met Gala in 2023. The dress was originally worn by Cindy Crawford in 1993 for Chanel’s spring collection.

13. CinemaCon (April 2023)

At CinemaCon, Margot Robbie channeled Barbiecore yet again with a matching gingham set by Prada paired with pink Christian Louboutin heels.

14. Academy Awards (March 2023)

For the 2023 Oscars, Margot Robbie wore a stunning black dress by Giorgio Armani Privé. Although she skipped the red carpet, fans loved this classic and elegant look.

15. Golden Globe Awards (January 2023)

For our first hint at Robbie’s Barbiecore looks, she wore a baby pink Chanel dress to the 2023 Golden Globes. Although Robbie had wrapped filming Barbie at this point, the world was yet to experience her iconic role as Barbie herself.

16. Sydney Babylon Premiere (January 2023)

Margot Robbie wore a Versace dress to the Sydney premiere of Babylon. The red lace detailing was added and while it pays homage to the red dress Robbie wore in the film, some X users debated about whether or not it ruined the simplistic dress.

For the London premiere of Babylon, Margot Robbie wore a red backless dress designed by Valentino. The stunning dress also payed homage to Robbie’s red backless dress in the film.

Margot Robbie wore Alaia to the global premiere of Babylon. The cutout dress was yet another nod to the dress Robbie wore in the film.

19. London Amsterdam Premiere (September 2022)

Margot Robbie wore Celine to the London premiere of Amsterdam. The look featured a high slit and a matching cape.

20. Academy Awards (April 2021)

To the 2021 Oscars, Margot Robbie wore a custom metallic lace dress designed by Chanel. The metallic lace reflected beautifully on the red carpet.

21. Academy Awards (February 2020)

Margot Robbie wore vintage Chanel to the 2020 Oscars, where she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Bombshell. The dress, from Chanel’s spring/summer 1994 collection, was originally worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer.

22. BAFTA Film Awards (February 2020)

Margot Robbie wore a elegant black dress from Chanel’s spring/summer 2020 collection. The stunning dress had lace ruffle details on both the shoulders and at the waist.

23. Birds of Prey Premiere (January 2020)

For the Birds of Prey premiere, Margot Robbie wore a Dries Van Noten look. While the hot pink gloves are another foreshadow of Robbie’s Barbiecore looks, Robbie’s fans had mixed feelings and some even criticized her stylist Kate Young for this look.

For the 2020 SAG awards, Margot Robbie wore another controversial look. The Chanel dress was highly discussed online, where fans expressed their disapproval. Although it’s not everyone’s favorite look, Robbie looks gorgeous as always.

Margot Robbie’s 2020 Golden Globes look was a lot less controversial. Unlike her disliked outfits, this Chanel look is a lot more simplistic. Although, her top did require almost 4,000 sequins.
