“I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit," she told Vogue. "And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. He has produced multiple movies and TV series, including I, Tonya (2017), Dreamland (2019), Promising Young Woman (2020), Maid (2021) and Robbie’s upcoming film Barbie.
He has also worked as an assistant director for films like The Brothers Grimsby (2016), Macbeth (2015) and American Odyssey (2015).
Ackerley occasionally dabbled with on-screen work—playing an extra in the Harry Potter films, which Robbie is a huge fan of.
“My husband is in the Harry Potter movies. I was like, 'Had you told me sooner we would've been married very quickly,' she said on The Graham Norton Show. The Barbie actress met her husband on the set of the 2014 film Suite Française. Robbie was playing the role of Celine Joseph and Ackerley was the third assistant director.
They started dating shortly after and opened their production company, with Kerr (Robbie’s childhood friend) and McNamara (Ackerley’s colleague), the same year.
The couple leads a very private life, but they have worked together on many movie sets—with Robbie as an actor and/or producer and Ackerley as a producer. “We did this film instead of our honeymoon," she told Extra. "There were times we were sitting in a car parked in Atlanta freezing cold being like, 'We should be on a beach right now. We should be on a honeymoon. What are we doing?!'"
However, after I, Tonya wrapped, the couple went on their dream honeymoon in Tahiti—complete with an embarrassing run-in with Ellen DeGeneres and President Barack Obama.
“My husband’s going to kill me for telling this story, but it’s my favorite story ever,” Robbie said on The Ellen Show.
While on their honeymoon, Robbie and Ackerley went to the gym—where Ackerley donned some pretty short shorts.
“Tom puts on these shorts that are like his oldest gym shorts and they’re tiny. They’re really short and there’s nothing underneath. He was like, ‘Oh come on, who are we going to run into?’” she recounts. “We walk into the gym, and running on a treadmill is Ellen, and then on the treadmill next to her is Portia, her wife. And then you [Ellen] were like, ‘Have you met Obama?’ And standing next to them is former President Barack Obama.”
