Isn’t it everyone’s dream meet-cute to find the love of your life while at work? You’re just doing your job, and bam, in strolls your future husband. Well, that’s pretty much what happened to Asteroid City actress Margot Robbie.

Robbie met her now-husband Tom Ackerley on a movie set in 2013 when she was acting on-camera, and he was working behind the scenes. The two became friends, and then things turned romantic—despite Robbie not looking for something serious.

“I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit," she told Vogue. "And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, ‘Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him.’ And then it happened, and I was like, ‘Of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.’”

After they made it official, they founded a production company together in 2014, and then quietly wed in 2016. So, who is the man that stole Robbie’s heart and changed her mind about love? Here’s everything we know about Tom Ackerley:

Who is Margot Robbie married to now?

Margot Robbie is married to British filmmaker Tom Ackerley, who is best known for his role as a co-founder in LuckyChap Entertainment with Robbie, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr. He has produced multiple movies and TV series, including I, Tonya (2017), Dreamland (2019), Promising Young Woman (2020), Maid (2021) and Robbie’s upcoming film Barbie.

He has also worked as an assistant director for films like The Brothers Grimsby (2016), Macbeth (2015) and American Odyssey (2015).

Ackerley occasionally dabbled with on-screen work—playing an extra in the Harry Potter films, which Robbie is a huge fan of.

“My husband is in the Harry Potter movies. I was like, 'Had you told me sooner we would've been married very quickly,' she said on The Graham Norton Show. "But he was an extra when he was a little kid—he was one of the Slytherin extras when Draco pushes some kids out of the way to see Buckbeak in the third book. He pushes my husband out of the way."

How did Margot Robbie meet her husband?

The Barbie actress met her husband on the set of the 2014 film Suite Française. Robbie was playing the role of Celine Joseph and Ackerley was the third assistant director.

They started dating shortly after and opened their production company, with Kerr (Robbie’s childhood friend) and McNamara (Ackerley’s colleague), the same year.

The couple leads a very private life, but they have worked together on many movie sets—with Robbie as an actor and/or producer and Ackerley as a producer. Through LuckyChap Entertainment, they’ve worked together on I, Tonya, Dreamland, Promising Young Woman and Barbie, to name a few, and have numerous project in the works.

When did Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley get married?

There were never official reports that Robbie and Ackerley were engaged, but they secretly tied the knot in 2016—which Robbie later confirmed on Instagram.

Following their marriage, the pair postponed their honeymoon to work on I, Tonya.

“We did this film instead of our honeymoon," she told Extra. "There were times we were sitting in a car parked in Atlanta freezing cold being like, 'We should be on a beach right now. We should be on a honeymoon. What are we doing?!'"

However, after I, Tonya wrapped, the couple went on their dream honeymoon in Tahiti—complete with an embarrassing run-in with Ellen DeGeneres and President Barack Obama.

“My husband’s going to kill me for telling this story, but it’s my favorite story ever,” Robbie said on The Ellen Show.

While on their honeymoon, Robbie and Ackerley went to the gym—where Ackerley donned some pretty short shorts.

“Tom puts on these shorts that are like his oldest gym shorts and they’re tiny. They’re really short and there’s nothing underneath. He was like, ‘Oh come on, who are we going to run into?’” she recounts. “We walk into the gym, and running on a treadmill is Ellen, and then on the treadmill next to her is Portia, her wife. And then you [Ellen] were like, ‘Have you met Obama?’ And standing next to them is former President Barack Obama.”

Who else has Margot Robbie dated?

Prior to meeting Ackerley, Robbie’s dating history was pretty quiet—only ever being formally linked to one other person.

The Aussie actress dated Henry Aitken, whom she met on the set of Z for Zachariah (2015) when he was working in the art department, in early 2014. Their romance ended just about as quickly as it started, however, only lasting a few months.

“I made a conscious decision not to date actors,” she told Marie Claire in 2015.

While she vowed never to date an actor, Robbie has sparked romance rumors with a few big stars over the years. It was reported that Robbie and her The Legend of Tarzan (2016) co-star Alexander Skarsgård were seen getting cozy in 2015 while she was dating Ackerley—however, Robbie has never addressed those rumors.

During The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) filming, there were rumors that Robbie and her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio were embarking on a romantic venture—she was 22 at the time, which is right in Leo’s sweet spot for girlfriend age. But neither of the stars has ever confirmed this relationship.
