The Marc Jacobs Fall 2023 Show Might Set a New Record

On Monday evening, Marc Jacobs hosted its Fall 2023 runway show at the New York Public Library, presenting 29 looks in no more than three minutes — fast enough to be viewed in just one TikTok video.

The brand's shows notoriously start right on time, but this might set a new record. It doubled down on the innovation, opting to have the show notes written entirely by Chat GPT and OpenAI.

"The Marc Jacobs fashion show captivated audiences with its innovative approach to blending menswear-inspired tailoring with feminine aesthetics," the notes read. "The collection showcases impeccably tailored suits designed exclusively for women, accompanied by flat shoes, black tights and stunning altered gowns. The predominantly black and white palette created a striking visual impact, emphasizing the timeless elegance and versatility of monochrome fashion."

While the use of artificial intelligence may read as a decision to highlight recent advancements in technology, it seems to be more of an indirect commentary on consumption today — of the internet, of fashion, of content. Rather than put on a runway presentation where attendees could prop their phones up strategically to record just the final walk, the entirety of the presentation was a "blink-and-you-miss-it" moment — similarly to how quickly we scroll past content, forgetting to take in the artistry and the experience, which has been condensed and simplified by the internet. That lack of emotion feels evident through AI writing, which makes the argument for a technology-driven fashion industry feel less intriguing than ever.

Though AI and social commentary certainly was the talk of the show, the self-referential moments and sartorial elegance of the Fall 2023 collection aren't lost. Overall, the clothes can be broadly put in one of two boxes: short and tight (as with the dresses, bustiers, sharp-shouldered jackets and skirts) or boxy and covered (as seen in the suiting and voluminous fit of the trousers). But what's really special is the way they call to mind past Marc Jacobs shows, such as the asymmetrical pleating and mesh dressing reminiscent of Spring 2008 and the grunge elements that take us back to the designer's Spring 1993 line for Perry Ellis.
