Maple Leafs place Ben Harpur, Jordan Schmaltz on waivers

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ opening day roster is beginning to take shape after a series of transactions on Saturday, particularly affecting the defence corps.

Ben Harpur and Jordan Schmaltz were placed on waivers with the purpose of being reassigned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, the club announced.

Harpur and Schmaltz were acquired with the ostensible hopes of cracking Toronto’s third pairing and this development could mean that 2018 first-round pick Rasmus Sandin - who has impressed throughout the preseason - did enough to make the roster.

Pontus Aberg and Tyler Gaudet were also waived with the purpose of being reassigned to the Marlies.

Harpur featured for the Ottawa Senators in 2018-19, posting one goal and five points in 51 games. Schmaltz split time between the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage and the St. Louis Blues, but did not participate during the latter’s playoff run, which culminated in a Stanley Cup victory.

Darren Archibald, Jeremy Bracco, Adam Brooks, Rich Clune, Hudson Elynuik, Pierre Engvall and Teemu Kivihalme were all reassigned to the Marlies as well.
