How Many Times Did Justin Trudeau Do Brown and Blackface?

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau was having a decent week before pictures of him in brown- and blackface makeup started cropping up. He's in the middle of a re-election campaign, and polling numbers that came out on Monday seemed to give him a pretty good edge, according to Politico. But Trudeau has been fighting criticism for a while now that the image of the polished, progressive leader he presents doesn't quite line up with the politician he really is. And multiple revelations of Trudeau wearing racist costumes isn't helping him.

The first photo surfaced Wednesday night, showing a 29-year-old Trudeau at an "Arabian Nights"–themed party in 2001, dressed as Disney's Aladdin with inexplicably dark makeup on his face and hands.

Trudeau admitted to the second instance himself, perhaps in an effort to get ahead of it coming out. On Wednesday night, he gave a public apology for the Aladdin photo, saying, "This is something I shouldn’t have done many years ago. It was something that I didn’t think was racist at the time, but now I recognize it was something racist to do, and I am deeply sorry." He also confessed that he once put on blackface in high school and performed the Jamaican folk song "Day O."

Then, on Thursday, Canadian news outlet Global News posted a video that shows Trudeau "covered in what appears to be dark makeup and raising his hands in the air while laughing, sticking his tongue out and making faces. He’s wearing a white T-shirt, and his jeans are ripped at the knees. It appears as though his arms and legs are covered in makeup as well."

Trudeau's now dealing with backlash similar to what Virginia governor Ralph Northam faced earlier this year, when yearbook photos surfaced that allegedly showed him in blackface. Northam apologized at first, then insisted it wasn't actually him in the photo, and during a press conference about it he almost moonwalked, for some reason.

With Halloween coming up, it's a good time to remember that such messes can be avoided by simply not wearing blackface.
