America’s sweetheart Jennifer Garner has returned to our screens at long last, this time leading a new iteration of our favorite media: miniseries adapted from BookTok novels. Apple TV+’s The Last Thing He Told Me joins the likes of Daisy Jones and the Six and Tiny Beautiful Things, all of which hit streaming services recently and all of which were produced by Hello Sunshine, the billion dollar brainchild of Reese Witherspoon.

Jen Garner's new series comes from the novel of the same name, written by author Laura Dave. The story follows a woman and her distant teenage stepdaughter as they unravel the sudden disappearance of their husband and father, respectively. Jennifer plays the lead role of Hannah Hall alongside Angourie Rice, who you may recognize from HBO’s Mare of Easttown. (In both projects, Angourie plays the vital role of spunky, angsty teen, but in The Last Thing He Told Me, it’s the theater kid version.)

The new series came out of a brutal bidding war and a lead actress shake-up before landing on Apple TV+. Originally, Julia Roberts was set to star in the series but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Whether you’ve read the original book cover to cover, or are just learning about it now (like literally, right now), it’s not too late to catch up on the new TV series. First: What Has Happened So Far?

The pilot episode, titled “Protect Her,” introduces us to a familiar world in the Hello Sunshine universe: affluence that somehow seems grounded, vision-board worthy real estate, and complex family dynamics exacerbated by angry teenagers. We meet Hannah, happily married to her Tech Daddy husband and walking on eggshells around her stepdaughter Bailey, who is executing moves from the “wary of dad’s new bride” playbook. One day, Hannah's husband mysteriously disappears amid a spicy embezzlement investigation, leaving everything behind including a note from a yellow legal pad (those still exist) that reads “protect her.” Together, Hannah and Bailey embark on a mission to find out the truth about their missing patriarch.

When Does The Next Episode of The Last Thing He Told Me Drop?
