How Many Bath Towels Should You Really Own? Here's What Experts Say

According to our experts, there's a method to the linen-closet madness.

Growing up, my sisters and I subscribed to a set of unspoken rules regarding our towels: the periwinkle ones were used for bath time, the patterned ones were for beach days, and the ratty ones with runaway threads, stains, or holes were retired to the laundry room cabinet, where they lived in between our dogs’ baths and our own occasional romps through the mud. When it came time to stock my own linen closet as an adult, I found myself taking a similar approach, filling our upstairs storage with the everyday towels and exiling older, rattier towels to the basement. But while I feel good about my organizational tactics, the sheer quantity of towels that my husband and I have in our newly-combined collection has me wondering how many is too many. This is what the experts say about the number of bath towels you should really own.

Meet the Experts

Lindsey Johnson is the co-founder and CEO of Weezie, a Georgia-based towel brand.

Charleston, South Carolina, native Kate Strickler runs lifestyle blog Naptime Kitchen and is the creator of The Home Reset, an audio series designed to help listeners tackle home organization.

Four is the magic number of bath towels per person, says Lindsey Johnson, co-founder and CEO of beloved Georgia-based towel brand Weezie, which is known for its easily customizable piping and monogram styles. “We launched with our bestselling Weezie Starter Pack for a reason. We think it’s the ideal quantity for one adult,” says Johnson of the set, which includes four bath towels (or sheets, if you want something a little larger), plus one pair of hand towels.

For the Weezie co-founder, the number comes down to both practicality and aesthetics. “With four bath towels, you can have one or two in use or in the wash, while two are left on display,” she says.

Kate Strickler, the creative and practical mind behind Charleston, South Carolina-based lifestyle blog Naptime Kitchen, offers a more conservative number. “I would say two [bath towels] per person so they can always have a fresh towel while the other is being washed.”

She suggests keeping a higher number of towels on hand to accommodate overnight visitors—between two to four sets (bath towel, hand towel, and washcloth) per guest room. “We have two sets and if we ever have more guests than that, they just use our extra personal towels,” she notes.

Strickler also recommends having plenty of beach or pool towels on hand: one per family member, plus two to four extras for out-of-towners. “We live by the beach, so having guest beach towels is nice,” she says.

So there you have it: Two is just fine; four’s even better. But no matter how many bath towels you have, make sure to give them a good wash every two to three uses—that’s the most important number of all!
