A Manhattan Apartment Fit for Royalty Just Listed for $5.8 Million

If this opulent New York City apartment looks fit for royalty, that’s because it is—literally. The elegantly appointed duplex apartment on the sixth and seventh floors of 1136 Fifth Avenue, a stately pre-war apartment house designed by architect George F. Pelham in 1925, is now available through Eric Schwarzkopf, Katherine Camp, and Matt Holbein of Compass for $5.8 million. Fun fact: Pelham designed the apartment as his personal residence.
According to the marketing materials, residence 6A was owned by the late Sicilian Princess Maria Niscemi Romanoff, founder and creator of Mimi di N Design Costume Jewelry, and her late husband, Prince Alexander Nikitich Romanoff, the great-nephew of the last Russian Czar. The couple, who lived in the Fifth Avenue apartment for half a century, is said to have hosted numerous dinner parties over the years, with everyone from notable aristocrats to foreign dignitaries and celebrities in attendance.

The abode features four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms in over 4,000 square feet of exquisitely detailed living space. Among its regal charms are soaring 25-foot ceilings, intricate plasterwork and detailed moldings, and glossy black-and-white checkerboard marble floors.
The main floor sports a baronial double-height foyer with a discreet powder room, a 29-foot-long corner living room decked out with a working wood-burning fireplace, and oversized windows overlooking Central Park. Nearby, the ample formal dining room is complete with a hidden door that opens to the butler’s pantry and a simply appointed eat-in kitchen with two north-facing windows. Tucked behind the kitchen, a former staff room serves as a petite home office with a compact en suite bath.
The white marble staircase makes a dramatic ascent to the upper level, where all of the bedrooms are located. At the top of the stairs, two bedrooms with custom built-ins share a Jack-and-Jill-style bath, while the other two bedrooms, which can easily function as a single suite, each have an attached bath.
Should the artwork be appealing, the original pieces found throughout the apartment will be available at an upcoming auction.
The historic Upper East Side building comprises a total of 43 apartments, with two to three units on each of its 14 floors. Since it was constructed nearly a century ago, the co-op has drawn its fair share of notable residents, including Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid. Plus, its penthouse apartment once served as the fictional home of Blair Waldorf in the hit CW drama Gossip Girl and, at one point, belonged to Stephen Cooper, the former CEO of Warner Music Group.
