If you’re a Teen Wolf fan, you know that Shelley Hennig’s character Malia is known for her long gorgeous hair. When we saw her super fresh short haircut, we knew she needed to come in for a Mane Muse shoot ,stat. With the help of Australian hair guru Kevin Murphy, we showed off just how versatile short hair can be.

“I was so excited that The Kevin Murphy behind the amazing products was doing my hair,” says Shelley. “He’s amazing! I’m really impressed with him. He can do anything with hair, it’s unbelievable.”

“The inspiration [for the first look] came from the 20’s and 30’s, but with a modern twist on it,” says Kevin, “you know changing texture and making it a little off.”

On the inspiration behind her short cut, Shelly tells us “I went to Europe last summer for the first time and I noticed everyone was so natural and effortless with their hair. I realized that my hair was so much work, and that’s just not me. I kept wearing my hair in a braid, and all I cared about was that my bangs were out. So then I kept thinking, what if I cut the braid? So I did!”

“My haircut has really inspired my new interest in 90’s style. I love the tomboy feel of short hair. It feels more like myself. My character, Malia, and I both are similar in that way. We dress for comfort. Malia is always ready to fight and I’m always ready to travel or on the go.”

“It’s great working with someone with shorter hair for a change,” says Kevin. “Most models/actresses arrive with much longer hair and it’s harder to change the look of the it.”

On her favorite products: “I love the Kevin Murphy leave in conditioner,” says Shelly. “It helps my hair not feel brittle, especially with how much I have to style it. It leaves the hair soft, and prevents any damage. It also doesn’t feel heavy or greasy and I love the scent! It actually has pepper in it, but with the way it’s formulated, it actually has a sweet scent to it. You could literally use it as a perfume because it smells so good and the pepper keeps it a little masculine!”

When on set, reworking the hair over and over can leave the strands feeling dull, tired, and heavy. “The beauty of the Kevin Murphy products is that you can use them again and again and again. We’ve put 5 different products in her hair and it looks completely normal,” says Kevin. “The products are really weightless and really easy, quick change products. I made them for myself initially (laughs) so the best thing is they don’t add weight and there’s no visible signs of product. You can quickly brush product out without having to wash the product out.”

The key products Kevin recommends for every stylist looking to emulate these looks: “Anti Gravity Spray,Smooth Again, and Session Spray. I’m a hairspray guy!!!,” he says. “And the wave clips! we used them today and they give a certain… they don’t give an S-formation they give it that bump… so the hair is not really curly and not really straight. It’s done, but its undone at the same time.”
