Mandy Moore Reveals the Inspiration for Her 2019 Emmys Look

Mandy Moore scored her very first acting nomination at the 2019 Emmys for her performance in This Is Us. And though she's walked plenty of red carpets in her life, this one was particularly special—and she showed up in spectacular fashion.

For the occasion, she wore a stunning off-the-shoulder color-blocked gown by designer Brandon Maxwell.

"I wanted something that sort of spoke to American glamour, and I think Brandon Maxwell is the personification of that," Moore told Glamour on the red carpet. "I think he is the next in line of the Ralph Laurens and Calvin Kleins and Michael Korses. And it's just classic. I feel like myself and I feel confident. And that's what I wanted: to just feel like me, but elevated."

As for choosing the bright color combination (that became the unofficial color scheme of the night), Moore added that she's not typically a "pink girl," but that the combination just spoke to her: "It's my favorite."

According to Moore's stylist, Cristina Erlich, planning for Moore's look began before they knew she'd be attending the Emmys as a nominee. "We actually started discussing the dress even before the nominations came out," she told Glamour. "We all had the idea for this in Paris during the summer couture shows, but we knew it would be for something amazing! Once the nominations came out, we knew we had to go to Brandon Maxwell. He infused his expertise of tailoring and design with the concept of '90s glamour." She added that "many striking images of Cindy Crawford" were used for inspiration.

Maxwell also included a special touch for Moore, embroidering her name on the label of her look. "He's a class act, that Brandon Maxwell," Moore said. "I hope that means I get to keep it, and that I'll get to pass this on to my kids one day."

A gown custom-made for her wasn't even the most luxurious part of her look: Moore accessorized with $225,000 worth of Forevermark diamonds. "I think there's nothing more classic than diamonds. Simple diamonds," she said. "There's a lot going on in the dress. So I wanted to make sure that the jewelry was sophisticated and really emphasized everything that was going on."

The earrings in particular were a point of interest for Erlich: "They're interesting as they are waterfall diamonds centered by a stunning emerald cut stone that sits on the ear."

"I feel like if you're lucky enough to get to come to any of these kinds of events at all, you kind of become the quintessential girl and you fantasize and think, Cool, now what do I want to do?" she said of the look. "And it's all an opportunity to express yourself and do something a little different."
