Mandy Moore, Chrissy Metz, and More 'This Is Us' Stars React to Tragic Death of Show Writer Jas Waters

The cast and crew of This Is Us is mourning the loss of one of their own.

Jas Waters, who worked as a staff writer for the hit NBC show, died this week at 39 years old.

This Is Us writers confirmed the heartbreaking news in a Twitter statement on Wednesday. The cause of death was later confirmed to be suicide.

"The entire #ThisIsUs family was devastated to learn of Jas Waters passing. In our time together, Jas left her mark on us and ALL over the show. She was a brilliant storyteller and a force of nature," said a tweet from the writers' joint account. "We send our deepest sympathies to her loved ones. She was one of us. RIP @JasFly."

Jas worked as a staff writer on 18 episodes of This Is Us between 2017 and 2018. She also wrote for the shows Kidding, Hood Adjacent with James Davis, and The Breaks, and received a story by credit for the 2019 movie What Men Want.

Before she became a television writer, Jas was journalist who wrote for Vibe magazine and co-starred on the 2013 VH1 reality series The Gossip Game.

On Wednesday, the cast and crew of This Is Us took to social media to mourn Jas' passing.

Actress Mandy Moore, who plays matriarch Rebecca Pearson on the tearjerking series, tweeted her condolences to Jas' loved ones.

"Sending love and light to @JasFly ’s family and loved ones. 💓💓💓💓," she said.

Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate Pearson, tweeted, "We were graced with @JasFly on the show as a fantastic writer but to know her and her beautiful spirit was to love her. I am praying for your beautiful transition, Jas. May it be full of love, light and peace. Thank you for the time we shared, your fearlessness and inspiration."

Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Beth Pearson on This Is Us, tweeted, "Incredibly shocked and saddened to have just receive this news. Blessed Light, fly with the angels."

And This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman shared a Twitter statement that read: "This news took my breath away. Jas was absolutely brilliant and had so many stories still to tell. She made an indelible mark on our show and my heart breaks for her loved ones. RIP @JasFly."
