Mandarin Oriental Is Opening 3 New Resorts in One of Japan’s Most Beautiful Coastal Regions

One of Japan’s most beautiful and temperate regions is getting the Mandarin Oriental treatment.

The luxury hotel brand is developing not one but three unique resorts in Setouchi, a coastal area in the country’s southern archipelago. The properties—all of which will branded as Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi—are slated to launch between 2027 and 2030.

The resorts will all offer the high-touch luxe amenities that travelers have come to expect from the Mandarin Oriental. Japanese artisans have been tapped to create the resorts’ designs, which will utilize centuries-old techniques to honor the destination’s traditions and history.

Each of the three properties will offer distinct experiences. In 2027, a 92-room urban resort will open in the harbor of Takamatsu, the capital city of Kagawa district. The area is known as the “gateway to Setouchi,” according to the brand. In addition to offering panoramic views of the sea, the property will host restaurants, bars, a spa, and wellness facility.

In contrast, a 22-room outpost at Naoshima, an island town in Japan’s Seto Island Sea, will offer a more intimate experience. Its contemporary Japanese ryokan design will sit in a picturesque fishing village, on a site that’s been the home to a Samurai kin group, the Miyake clan, for over 800 years. Ryokan-style guest suites and villas, inspired by traditional Japanese inns, will be sited in the main building as well as in three village houses. Many will feature private terraces and gardens. The boutique-size property is slated to open in 2027 as well.

The third Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi property will be located on a separate island, according to the brand, and feature 50 guest rooms and immersive wellness experiences. It’s slated to open in 2030 with more details on its offerings to come. You’ll be able to visit all three resorts via a private yacht tour that’s being designed by the hotel brand. The first-of-a-kind concept for Mandarin Oriental will allow you to take in the region’s unique attractions and enjoy its mild coastal climes. As we’ve always said, there’s more to Japan than just Tokyo.
