'The Mandalorian' Season 2 Finale Revealed an Absolutely Epic Spinoff

Hot damn! You're here for the same reason we're all here—we just watched that post-credits scene from The Mandalorian's Season 2 finale, "The Rescue," and, well, we just need to talk about it. Mainly the fact that we saw Boba Fett and Fennec Shand, now on Tatooine, take Jabba's palace and kick a whole load of ass. Boba took out a rather squirmy Bib Fortuna, who seemed to have taken Jabba's place in the time since Return of the Jedi, and took the throne for himself, Fennec literally sitting as his right-hand. Then a flash told us: The Book of Boba Fett. Coming December 2021.
Not to start a second consecutive paragraph with an exclamation, but sheesh! Boba Fett has long been rumored for his own film, but the thinking was that The Mandalorian sort of took the place of that, and his rolling into the Season 2 storyline was something of a consolation. Well, Star Wars fans waiting since the original trilogy for a bit more on that badass-looking green-plated bounty hunter got a taste of Boba Fett in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, and are about to get a whole lot more of it in 2021 with The Book of Boba Fett.
When will The Book of Boba Fett come out?
The timing for The Book of Boba Fett is one of the things we do know. As the subtitle of The Mandalorian Season 2's finale scene read, The Book of Boba Fett is planned for a December 2021 release. While this could be simultaneous with The Mandalorian Season 3, it's more likely that this new Boba Fett spinoff series will be the lone Star Wars TV event of 2021, and Season 3 of the Din and Grogu show will be pushed a bit down the line to 20222.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said previously that the next "chapter" in the Mandalorian story would be out in time for Christmas 2021—but she didn't explicitly say which. Is it possible that The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett could both air in December 2021? Sure. But given the way Boba's story intertwined with everything else in Season 2, we'd wager that this is what she was talking about.
What will The Book of Boba Fett be about?
While the credits scene clearly sets up a future of Boba taking charge of the empire that Jabba the Hutt once oversaw, the title—The Book of Boba Fett—sounds a little more expansive.
Yes, we'll see what he's doing in the present, but Star Wars fans have been waiting since 1983 to learn how the hell Boba Fett got out of the belly of that damn Sarlacc Pit (and if the scars on Boba's unmasked face were any indicator, uh, it wasn't fun). We always knew Boba Fett was going to survive one way or another; the dude was just too much of a badass to get killed by a temporarily-blinded Han Solo in basically a comic relief bit. But we still need to know what the hell went down.
There will probably be a series of flashbacks that show how Boba did the things we know he did at this point—disintegrate people, escape the pit, met up and saved Fennec, etc—and also a series of things we didn't know he did. And that's on top of his exciting new future of...whatever is happening on Tattooine. Oh man. December 2021 can't come soon enough.
Who will be in the cast?
Based on the way Season 2 ended, it's safe to say that The Book of Boba Fett will be led by Temuera Morrison (as Boba Fett) and Ming-Na Wen (as Fennec Shand). Granted that Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) had his armor, maybe a flashback episode or sequence could show us how that all went down; we also could see what went into Boba and Fennec's first encounter in Mandalorian Season 1.
If the show is coming out in December 2021, as the subtitle of the finale's post-credits scene says, that means that the show's casting is likely complete. We don't know who else will be in the show yet, but we likely will soon.
