“We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster…” Well, maybe not faster, but you get the idea.

Andrew Wardle, a 45-year-old man from Manchester, U.K., has a congenital abnormality known as bladder exstrophy. In Wardle’s case, it resulted in the growth of testicles but no penis. While bladder exstrophy affects one in every 40,000 births, a child born with no organ at all only affects one in 20 million people.

But Wardle’s road to replacing his penis wasn’t easy. He underwent a 10-hour operation to fit his new bionic penis three months ago. He first had to experience an erection with his new penis, which Wardle described as “ridiculously big,” for 10 days and then had to wait six weeks before he had sex.

After that time period, Wardle was able to consummate his relationship with his girlfriend, Fedra Fabian. A week after the fireworks, however, Fabian found her boyfriend unconscious and quickly rushed him to the hospital, where he spent five days in a coma.

Barry Tomes, Wardle’s publicist, told the Daily Mail that Wardle was experiencing a fever and vomiting for a few days. Doctors thought he had norovirus, Tomes said. Wardle was due to appear on This Morning in London but was forced to cancel due to his health.

“He was so ill they couldn’t do any scans. … It’s been quite terrifying. Their biggest worry was that the damage had been caused by having sex. But it was a [gallbladder] issue,” Tomes explained, adding that Wardle was undergoing keyhole surgery on his gallbladder.

The hospitalization had nothing to do with his new penis or losing his virginity.

After the surgery that fitted him with a penis, Wardle is excited about the future and what it holds, including possibly starting a family with his girlfriend.
