Mammoth Mountain's 900 Inches Of Snow Has Finally Melted
Mammoth Mountain, California recorded more than 900 inches (75 feet) of snowfall at the resort's 11,053' summit during the Winter '22-'23 season.
The record season kept skiers and snowboarders sliding on snow until August 6th, 2023. It was Mammoth's second longest season in history. Believe it or not, but 900 inches of snow eventually melts out.
Mammoth announced on the evening of August 17th, 2023 that the melted snow has made it possible to open one of the resort's most popular mountain biking trails- Off The Top. More info in the Facebook post below:
Mammoth Mountain: "The 900" of snow that fell on top of the mountain has now melted revealing one of our all-time favorite trails Off the Top. Winding its way down the back of the mountain Off the Top provides awesome views, great flow, and an insane amount of ride time. Access will be via the Upper Panorama Gondola which opens to bikes tomorrow. There is still a good amount of snow around the Chair 12 area so returning to Main Lodge will be via White Bark or The Eliminator.
Please note - There is a section of snow on Santiago Bowl that will need to be navigated."
This is big news for mountain bikers who have been ever-so-patiently waiting for last year's snow to melt.
Off The Top will open today, August 17th, with access provided by the Upper Panorama Gondola, which is also opening for bikers for the first time this season.
Let's make one thing clear- Mammoth never recorded 900+ inches of snow on the ground, but they got pretty darn close. Still, it's hard to believe that nearly all of the snow from a record-breaking season is gone.
Fret not, skiers. Mountain bikers will enjoy a few weeks of riding, but Mammoth is already gearing up for opening day 2023. The resort announced their intended opening day of November 10th, 2023 just a couple of weeks ago.
