Mammoth Mountain Extends Ski Season Into August

Mammoth Mountain, California, just announced another ski season extension, pushing its already-drawn-out skiing and riding operating window into August.

For more details, check out Mammoth's Instagram post below.

The resort, which previously stated that it would remain open through the end of July, will now close on Sunday, August 6th. This is the third time in Mammoth's 69-year operating history that it has offered lift-accessed skiing in August, with the other extended summer seasons being 1995 and 2017.

Mammoth is open daily from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM through closing day. In a press email, a resort representative noted that "Operations between now and closing will likely be impacted by snow conditions. Make sure and check the website for the latest on terrain."

The extension announcement comes on the heels of a historic winter. Mammoth blew past its previous snowfall record this past season, receiving a mind-blowing 715 inches of snow. The landmark snowfall facilitated the extended season and satisfied powder-hungry skiers.

Skiers, predictably, rejoiced in the comments section of Mammoth's Instagram post detailing the extension.

"Yesss. I was hoping this would happen! 2nd time my dream has come true of snowboarding the mountain on my birthday!!!" wrote one commenter.

"Yeah!!! keep the turns going," said another.

Although one skier pointed out that, due to warming temperatures and shrinking snow coverage, much of Mammoth's beginner terrain is no longer open.

"Just a heads up to folks with kids, there's no beginner runs open and everyone is funneled into a tight run at one point. It's a bit dicey with the little ones right now," they wrote.

Mammoth and Timberline Lodge, Oregon, are now the only public-access ski resorts open in North America. Timberline, which often stays open until early September, will likely outpace Mammoth and continue offering skiing beyond August 6th.
