Makoto Shinkai, the director behind Weather With You (2019) and Your Name, which famously surpassed Spirited Away's record for highest-grossing anime film ever back in 2017, has returned with a new film titled Suzumi no Tojimari (Suzume's Locking-Up). The upcoming film follows 17-year-old Suzume who meets a mysterious young man named Souta looking for a door in the mountains. Suzume later finds out that the door is one of many appearing in lonely areas across Japan that are responsible for various disasters. Joining Suzume on her adventures is a magical cat and Souta, who gets turned into a wooden chair.

Suzume no Tojimari is scheduled to release in Japan November 11 and will premiere in the U.S. in early 2023. Below is the official description of the film:

“On the other side of the door, was time in its entirety—
17-year-old Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu when she encounters a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly mesmerized by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob…

Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.

The stars
The sunset
The morning sky

Within that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the sky—

Drawn in by this mysterious door, Suzume’s journey is about to begin.”
