If CNN & Fashion Police Had A Baby, You’d Want to Watch

The comic Web series “Political Fashion Chat” is billed as being “like ‘Fashion Police’ and CNN had a baby,” and for once, the PR description feels almost … accurate.

Anna Callegari of “Broad City” and Upright Citizens Brigade fame plays host on each brief, 2-minute-ish episode, brought to you by Internet Action Force. Callegari recaps some of the most notable political sartorial moments in recent memory, and asks her trusty team of funny-person panelists, Sharron Paul (Lady Parts Justice, Cheap Date Comedy) and Walter Replogle (Murderfist) to weigh in.

Though the show officially launched last year, it’s heating up now amid the increasingly frenzied pre-election landscape. Describing it as a funny “political fashion show devoid of partisan rancor,” editor in chief John DeVore explains that he hatched the idea for the show because “no one really covers political fashion, which is a huge non-verbal way that the world’s most powerful people communicate.”

In the most recent October episode, dubbed “Let’s Make Donald Trump’s Outfit Great Again,” the comedians critique none other than The Donald (plus a few others, including President Obama and Hillary Clinton).

Though some of Anna Callegari’s descriptions of the looks in question flounder at times, especially when it comes to colors (at one point she describes John Boehner’s resignation suit as “charcoal black” and Obama’s tie as “midnight royal blue”), she’s quietly charming. The comedians don’t get anywhere near as catty or vitriolic as the Fashion Police crew, though they’re certainly not resistant to voicing their opinions. At one point, Replogle dismisses Hillary Clinton’s Lena Dunham interview top as “a blouse made out of Smurfs.”

There’s also a silly bit toward the end of each episode, “Capitol Dome,” in which Callegari flashes the top portion of a politician’s head and makes Paul and Replogle guess “who the locks belong to.”

“Remember: your outfit selection matters more than any election,” Callegari reminds viewers in parting on the October episode. While we’re can’t co-sign that (clearly tongue-in-cheek) statement, we admittedly had no clue it could be so fun to watch people dissect the fashion choices of stuffy politicos in suits.
