13 Best Makeup Products for Sensitive SkinLAUNCHMETRICS SPOTLIGHT

It took me a long time to accept that I have sensitive skin. But considering how quick my skin was to react to environmental changes (hello, rosacea!) or actives in skincare, there came a point where I could no longer live in denial. “The classification of ‘sensitive skin’ refers to skin that is more reactive to changes—hormonal, products, dietary, environmental, and lifestyle. Reactions can include temporary stinging, burning and discomfort, as well as redness, irritation, inflammation, and [a] rash [or] eczema,” explains Dr. Deanne Mraz, a board-certified dermatologist and the president and co-founder of Modern Dermatology in Westport, CT. If that sounds like you, one way to prevent untimely skin reactions is to stock your routine with the best makeup products for sensitive skin.

In general, there are some particularly irritating ingredients that you should try to avoid, like fragrances, essential oils, and alcohols. On the flipside, there are a few ingredients that might even be beneficial to your skin and help calm it down. “Since sensitive skin may lack hydration and have disrupted skin barrier function, one should look for products that rehydrate and restore the skin like ceramides. Other moisturizing ingredients include niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. Someone with sensitive skin who is not acne prone, I do recommend using more hydrating ingredients like dimethicone,” says Dr. Kseniya Kobets, a board-certified dermatologist and the director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Advanced Care in Elmsford, NY. At the end of the day, though, it all depends on how your skin reacts to a certain formula—not all people with sensitive skin will have the same triggers. That’s why it’s important to test products before applying them and keeping them on your face all day.

Through trial and error, I’ve discovered a bevy of foundations, blushes, lipsticks, and other products that enhance my features without aggravating my skin. With the help of other ELLE editors, dermatologists, and celebrity makeup artist Tobi Henney, I’ve created this master list of the 13 best makeup products for sensitive skin.

Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer

You can use serum-like concealer from Tower 28 Beauty all over your face, including under your eyes and over blemishes. Its ingredients, though, are what really set it apart; one of the star ingredients, centella asiatica leaf extract, is renowned for its soothing abilities, while another, hyaluronic acid, is there to keep your skin hydrated and smooth.

Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica leaf extract, lysine

Size: 0.22 oz.

Sephora rating: 4.3/5 stars

An ELLE contributor says: “I’m convinced that if you Google the phrase “sensitive skin,” my face will appear in the image results. In all seriousness, though, Tower 28’s concealer is a savior for my hyper-reactive complexion. All the brand’s products are formulated specifically for sensitive, easily irritated skin types, with this formula being no exception. The nourishing concealer slides on like a serum to calm and hydrate, plus it effectively covers my blemishes and redness with just a few swipes. In fact, I can seamlessly blend and build it for full yet natural-looking coverage. Whenever I wear this concealer, I often earn compliments on how clear and radiant my skin looks.” Sam Peters, Hearst senior commerce editor

Satin Kajal Liner

Victoria Beckham Beauty is one of Henney’s top picks for sensitive skin, and the satin kajal liner is a fan favorite from the line. Whether you want to create a smokey eye or add some shimmer to your look, the shade range has everything you need—plus, it has anti-inflammatory properties!

Key ingredients: Chamomile extract, panthenol, vitamin E, silica pearl

Size: 1.2 g.

Victoria Beckham Beauty rating: 4.4/5 stars

An ELLE editor says: “I’ve always dreamed of scribbling on an eyeliner and smudging it out with my fingers to get a smokey, sultry eye look, and thanks to Posh Spice, I can now do it with the most beautiful colors and formula I’ve come across thus far. It’s blendable, so you don’t have to rub your eyes too hard to smudge, yet it sets down so that it’s not all over your under eyes by the end of the day.” Carol Lee, ELLE.com associate e-commerce beauty writer

Cloud Paint Bronzer

Glossier’s latest bronzer launch is actually an extension of their existing Cloud Paint line, but the five new shades, ranging from a light neutral tan to a deep neutral bronze, are meant to act more like bronzers than blush on the face. They’re dermatologist-tested to ensure they’re safe for all types of skin.

Key ingredients: Collagen, blurring powder pigments

Size: 0.33 fl. oz.

Glossier rating: 4.5/5 stars

An ELLE editor says: “My skin’s a snob and overly sensitive. Cloud Paint feels like a dream on my skin, which typically hates to be bogged down by any heavy formulas. This formula is lightweight and breathable, so I can wear it for the full day without fear of feeling squeamish at the end of the day when it’s time to remove it. Plus, it’s transparent enough to look natural for daily wear, but can also be built up for a full glam-ish look.” Nerisha Penrose, ELLE.com beauty commerce editor

Luminescent Eye Shade

Luxury makeup lovers, these shimmery shadows are calling your name! The gel-powder formula almost feels wet to the touch and the shimmer is so finely milled that it’s flattering on people of all ages. Fun fact: Each shade supports conservation efforts for a different endangered animal.

Key ingredients: Glycerin, squalane

Size: 0.08 oz.

Neiman Marcus rating: 4.7/5 stars

An ELLE editor says: “Eyeshadow isn’t an everyday thing for me. So if I’m going to wear an eyeshadow, it’s got to be special. There’s no doubt that these shadows deserve a spot in my sparse eyeshadow collection—just look at how gorgeous and nuanced these shimmery shades are. I’m a sucker for taupes and cool browns, so naturally, my favorite is Elephant.”—Carol Lee

Dew Blush Blendable Liquid Blush

The 2024 beauty trend forecasters report that glowy is still in this year, and Saie’s sensitive skin-friendly blush can help you achieve the look. It actually keeps the skin underneath dewy, too; the formula is infused with plant-derived glycerin, which traps moisture within the skin.

Key ingredients: Elderberry fruit extract, licorice root extract, plant-derived glycerin

Size: 0.40 oz.

Sephora rating: 4.4/5 stars

An ELLE editor says: Cream blushes are my kryptonite—not liquid ones. But this one makes my cheeks look so juicy it’s hard to resist. Like with everything else, I like to tap it onto my cheekbones with my fingers.”—Carol Lee

Almost Lipstick

You might be tired of hearing about the Clinique Black Honey lipstick, but trust us when we say that we’re not surprised it keeps going viral. It’s transparent, yet rich and deep, with so much hydration for those of us with chronically dry lips. And if Black Honey isn’t as flattering on you as you’d like, its sister shade, Pink Honey, might just be a match.

Key ingredients: Castor seed oil, candelilla wax

Size: 0.07 oz.

Ulta rating: 4.6/5

An ELLE contributor says: “I loved the resurgence of Clinique’s Black Honey lipstick, because it reminded me what a great formula it is. I don’t normally opt for lipstick, but I love how Black Honey gives you a hint of color, with plenty of hydration. I honestly feel like my bare lips look better after I’ve been wearing Black Honey for a few hours.” Tatjana Freund, Hearst Fashion & Luxury Commerce Editor

Limitless Lash Lengthening Clean Mascara

If length is the name of the game for you in terms of mascara, meet your soon-to-be new obsession. Sensitive eyes and skin don’t need to fear the gentle formula, and the rubber wand has two sections: one for applying the product onto your lashes and another to comb them out to banish clumps.

Key ingredients: Keratin, shea butter, beeswax

Size: 0.27 oz.

Sephora rating: 4.2/5 stars

An ELLE editor says: “This is one of my favorite mascaras and my first introduction to Ilia, which hooked me on this brand. The formula doesn’t clump and is a vivid black, but the best part is the applicator. The brush on the wand actually functions like a comb—evenly coating and separating each lash. It’s so satisfying to use!” —Danielle James

CC+ Cream Full Coverage Color Correcting Foundation with SPF 50+

This dermatologist favorite is a foundation, hydrating serum, and SPF 50+ sunscreen all rolled into one, and it’s full coverage enough to cover acne without a hitch. They’ve launched a wider shade range over the years, which means more people can enjoy this multihyphenate product.

Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamin E

Size: 1.08 oz.

Sephora rating: 4/5 stars

Our expert says: “I like CC creams or foundations that moisturize while providing coverage and mineral SPF action as well, especially for those prone to hyperpigmentation and melasma. I love to use It Cosmetics’ CC+ Cream, which provides various shades and mineral protection.” —Dr. Kobets

Phantom Volumizing Glossy Lip Balm

Hourglass’ rendition of the glossy balm is TikTok royalty. The brand keeps launching more shades, and beauty lovers continue snatching them up—the high-shine gloss-balm hybrid is irresistible. The plumping ingredient in the lip product, menthyl lactate, isn’t as irritating or downright painful as some other “plumping” ingredients can be; instead, all you’ll feel is a cool, minty sensation.

Key ingredients: Mango seed butter, avocado oil, shea butter, menthyl lactate

Size: 0.05 oz.

Sephora rating: 4.3/5 stars

An ELLE editor says: “Glossy products rarely catch my eye because I’m so devoted to matte lipsticks. Hourglass caught me off guard with this one—you can always catch Trace, a light brown, in my handbag these days. As long as you don’t apply too much, it’s not sticky, and it’s so gorgeous on the lips that I don’t mind pulling out the slim gold tube and reapplying a few times throughout the day.”—Carol Lee

Light-Catching Highlighter Balm Glaze

This highlighter possesses tiny bits of glimmering minerals suspended in a translucent base, allowing it to bestow glow onto fair, medium, and deep skin tones alike. Meanwhile, it nourishes the wearer’s skin with hydrating baobab seed oil.

Key ingredients: Baobab seed oil

Size: 0.14 oz.

Sephora rating: 4.1/5 stars

A Sephora reviewer says: “Super subtle and instant dewy look. It’s not too much shine or sparkle for me because I normally don’t wear a lot of highlighter. You would definitely need to reapply because it is a balm, but it’s a quick swipe. I actually love the minimalist packaging. This is a new staple product for me.”

Key ingredients: Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, sea mineral extract, pink bark extract, pomegranate extract

Size: 0.35 oz

Ulta rating: 4.7/5 stars

An ELLE editor says: “I expected to have to layer a liquid complexion product underneath this powder to really reach the amount of coverage I want on a typical work day, but this dermatologist-recommended covered everything I needed in just a few swipes. It didn’t cake up at all, and even when I apply a decent layer, it’s pretty undetectable.”—Carol Lee

What are some other ingredients those with sensitive skin might want to steer clear of?

Two major ingredients you should avoid if you have sensitive skin are actually chemical sunscreen ingredients: avobenzone and oxybenzone. “One mistake with makeup that I see sensitive skin patients make is that they use makeup that also contains sunscreen. While that’s a good idea to have a two-in-one moisturizer or makeup with SPF, it’s important to avoid avobenzone or oxybenzone in those products as they are irritating and allergenic and will become more so over time with chronic exposure—that’s why certain products that were tolerated in the past can start to cause issues in the skin over time, as the disrupted barrier allows the irritants and allergens to penetrate and develop sensitivity in the skin,” explains Dr. Kobets. Instead, she recommends mineral or physical SPF ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, since they’re not as likely to bring about contact dermatitis or an allergic reaction.

What is patch testing?

According to Henney, “A test patch of a product is a good idea if it’s the first time using it.” When patch testing beauty products at home, the American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends applying the product to a small patch of skin on your body and leaving it there for as long as you might typically have it on your skin. To really test your skin’s reaction to a product, conduct the test every day for up to 10 days. And if your skin has a bad reaction, wipe the product off and cleanse your skin immediately.
