Makeup Artist Yasaman Gheidi Proves There Is No Right Way to Do Makeup on Instagram

Beauty mistakes are a dime a dozen. You could sneeze seconds after applying mascara, draw on winged eyeliner so sharp that it pokes at your hairline, forget to put on sunscreen, or even fall asleep with your makeup on and wake up with a breakout. However, the most common beauty mistake is judging others based on how they do their makeup.

Makeup artist Yasaman Gheidi brought up this point in a recent Instagram post that went viral this weekend. She created a side-by-side photo with a colorful makeup look with bright fuchsia lipstick, matching eye makeup, and bold brows on the right. Then, the left side makeup had a more neutral color scheme with smoky eyes, pinky nude lipstick, and subtle contouring. Gheidi, who is known on social media as @lilmoonchildd, considered the left side to be a more widely accepted, Instagram-friendly look. Each side has a green checkmark over them to prove Gheidi's overall point: Both are completely fine. As she wrote in her caption, "Makeup is art and there's no right or wrong way to create art. There's no correct way to paint a picture of spring flowers, for example, you just paint the scene with your own interpretation."

This isn't the first time Gheidi has used her platform to spread a message to her about 82,300 Instagram followers. Earlier this year, she did another side-by-side look with one half of everyday makeup and the other was a cartoony blue and black to represent her depression. Back then, she used her makeup prowess to shed light on the stigma surrounding mental health. Now, she's speaking out on the way Instagram is changing the way we perceive and judge others — and in particular, their makeup.

In the age of bold, made-for-Instagram looks, people can be quick to form negative options about others based on the color of their lipstick, the fullness of their brows, or the contour of their nose. However, none of that really matters. A bit of blush doesn't change what makes you laugh or how you treat others. Some use it to accentuate their features, transform into Disney characters, or coordinate with an outfit they put together. Makeup, like fashion, is but another way to express yourself. Not everyone wears the same uniform, so why should we all wear dusty rose lipstick, right? There isn't supposed to be standard look that gets all the likes on Instagram.

Yasaman Gheidi drives this point home by saying, "Hell, if everyone followed the exact same model then there wouldn't be a Monet, a Van Gogh, a Da Vinci. BE YOURSELF, do your make up how you feel you look beautiful and eff everyone else." We couldn't agree more. Luckily, 10,597 people — and counting — who've liked her post do, too.
