Makeup Artist Darius McKiver Created an Amazing Contour Palette for Dark Skin Tones
Foundation and concealers have been the jumping-off point for many makeup brands looking to create products for darker skin tones. But the hyper-focus on base products have left other categories — like bronzer and contour — largely untouched and in need of improvement. Some brands have been working to fill those gaps: Take for instance Midas Cosmetics, which launched a face palette of rich hues specifically made for deep skin tones.
On July 16, the brand shared via Instagram that it was launching its Dusk to Dawn collection. The range includes four face palettes, curated by skin tone. Each has a highlighter, blush, contour, and bronzer shade. The palettes were created in collaboration with makeup artist Darius McKiver, also known as NeonMUA to his fans.
McKiver found it frustrating to see people with very dark complexions (like fellow influencer Nyma Tang) having to use eye shadows to contour or bronze. This gave him the idea to develop Midnight, the darkest of the four palettes. The highlighter is a shimmery yellow-gold shade that will make your cheekbones shine like ya mama's good jewelry. The deep burgundy blush is just the thing to add a warm flush to melanated cheeks. The contour is a cool-toned, dark brown hue that looks almost black in the pan, while the bronzer is a lighter chocolatey brown confection with warm undertones.
"Dusk to Dawn was my way of doing what was 'impossible' and cater to those who have always been left out," says McKiver in a statement from the brand. "I want the industry to see that major changes still need to happen, and if these big brands can’t do it, the indie brands and micro-influencers will."
