Major Colorado Ski Resort Delays Opening Day

Once trucking forward with boundless momentum, the ski season across western North America has lost some of its steam this week.

Yesterday, Telluride Ski Resort, Colorado, announced that it had delayed its opening day, citing "recent and forecasted warm weather."

Previously, the resort intended to open in late November. Now, it's targeting a December 2nd or December 8th opening date, weather and conditions dependent. The resort will provide further updates on November 27th.

"Our top-notch team and sophisticated snowmaking system have taken advantage of every snowmaking opportunity, which is why this was a close call in the first place," says Brandon Green, Telluride's Director of Snowmaking.

The weather is predicted to remain relatively warm at Telluride for the rest of the week, with a temperature plunge expected on Monday, November 20th.

While there is snow on the ground at Telluride -- perhaps enough to open a run or two with a consistent snowmaking push -- the resort has instead opted to wait until more coverage is available.

We pride ourselves on opening with a quality product and wall-to-wall coverage that provides a fun and safe skiing experience," says Patrick Latcham, Telluride's VP of Sales and Marketing.

Local skiers expressed support for Telluride's decision in the comments section of the announcement post, recognizing that ultimately, Mother Nature gets the final say in a resort's opening date:

"Waiting a couple more weeks is fine because at the end it's worth the wait to ski on perfect conditions. I would rather wait to ski on 150 inches of snow instead of a trace of snow."

"Your hard work to get the ski area open for the season is much appreciated."

"We appreciate the advanced notice."
