A Major Character Is Returning to 'SVU'—and There's a Twist You Won't See Coming

Time to dig up some clues as to what this all means.

Well, that was fast. TV Line reports that Kelli Giddish, who plays Detective Amanda Rollins on Law & Order: SVU, is set to return to the show's 24th season just months after filming what was thought to be her last episode of the series. And that's not even the most shocking part: Her character will reportedly (spoiler alert!) be pregnant. Does that mean Carisi is going to be a father? Or is a far less joyful plot-twist in the works?

Giddish made her (supposedly) final appearance on SVU in an episode that aired on Dec. 8, 2022. At the time, we saw her character marry A.D.A Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino) and opt to leave the squad for a teaching job.

"I started playing [Det. Rollins] in my late 20s, so I’ve played her in three decades of my life, which is nuts," Giddish told Variety after her exit. "...With playing someone as multi-faceted as Rollins, I got to play all kinds of different things—down and out, on top, joyful, doubtful, scared, triumphant. I got to do the gambit."

Giddish joined SVU in 2011 and stayed with the show for 12 years. She announced her exit ahead of the Season 24 premiere and, according to Variety, her departure was not her choice.

“I wanted to address the chatter I’ve seen online and let everyone know that this will, indeed, be my last season on Law & Order: SVU, Giddish told TVLine at the time.

“Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the Law & Order family for the last 12 years. There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.”

According to TV Line, Giddish will appear in SVU‘s upcoming Season 24 finale and in the penultimate Season 3 episode of Law & Order: Organized Crime.
