Maine Coon Mom Warns of One 'Curious' Trait the Breed Is Known For

If you've been thinking about getting a Maine Coon Cat be forewarned — they have their quirks. Nothing bad mind you, but let's just say they differ from most cats in a really unique and unusual way.

We all know that cats hate water — right? Well, not exactly. Maine Coon Cats are the exception to the rule. As most Maine Coon Cat owners know all too well.

As the video online shows, Maine Coon Cats actually like water. Heck, you could even say they have a water fixation. Which should be exciting! Except when you realize that means they'll be making messes for as long as you own one.

"If you want a Maine Coon Cat beware of this one thing," the online video's onscreen caption reads.

The clip shows several different Maine Coon Cats pawing at water bowls, pawing at bathtubs, and desperately trying to get at a full water bucket.

"Maine Coons sometimes have a curiosity for water and don't mind water as much as other cats," the video's caption reads. "Which will leave you having to clean up little puddles."

Yep, if cleaning isn't really your jam you should probably avoid these kitties. They aren't going to take it easy on you.

Other Quirky Maine Coon Traits

Of course, there are other reasons for getting a Maine Coon Cat. And some people would argue that their "quirks" are really a part of their charm. Take for instance the way that Maine Coons eat. While most cats will reach down and eat from their food bowl, Maine Coons actually use their front paws to eat and drink. They can take food from dishes and even pick toys up closer to their faces to get a closer look.

Something else that's sort of strange? Maine Coon Cats can easily stand on their hind legs and actually spend a lot of time that way. Or at least way more than normal cats do.

Maine Coon Cats are highly dexterous (clearly!), agile, and smart. They make unique noises too, which sound like a cross between a purr and a high, cooing and flicking sound. It's what makes Maine Coons distinctive and sound like they are speaking a language all their own!

As for their love of water, people in the comments section weren't afraid of a little spilled water. "My little furry Coon dips her paw in the water and then licks it of. That's how she drinks, it's the most adorable thing ever," one commenter shared. "Mine is so crazy about water, I also have to keep toilet seats down or the bathroom gets flooded," someone else chimed in. "I deal with my one's water antics everyday. I've had to find a water fountain he couldn't pull over," a third commenter lamented.

But despite the mess, every Maine Coon owner definitely thinks it's worth it. "Got to love Maine Coons," one commenter wrote.
