Joe Keery is known for his role as Steve Harrington on Stranger Things, his work with the psychedelic rock band Post Animal, and his gravity-defying hair, but some fans may not know that he also has a pretty amazing girlfriend, Maika Monroe.

Monroe is an actress from Santa Barbara, California, and she's most known for her work in films like Independence Day: Resurgence and It Follows. She also has a cool Instagram account and she's a rising fashionista, but there's still a lot that fans don't know about the 26-year-old.

Here's what you need to know about Joe Keery's girlfriend, Maika Monroe.

Maika Monroe isn't her birth name.

Monroe was actually born Dillon Monroe Buckley in May 1993. In an interview with Under the Radar, Monroe explained that when her mother was pregnant, she loved the names Dillon and Maika, but she ultimately chose to name her daughter Dillon.

But Monroe-who was known as Dillon at that time-said that she liked the name Maika more. "In first grade, I went around to all my teachers and said that I'm no longer responding to Dillon, and now I'm Maika," she said. "And, you know, went to the principal, went to my neighbors and told them, 'I'm Maika now.' Maika just fit me more. I think I liked it because no one else had it."

She and Joe starred in a movie together in 2018.

The couple began filming the comedy-drama After Everything (formerly known as Shotgun) in April 2017, and it premiered in 2018. The movie follows a young couple's relationship after one of them is diagnosed with a serious illness. Monroe played Mia, the young woman trying to cope with her boyfriend's illness, while Keery played Chris, a friend of the couple.

Monroe is a professional kiteboarder.

Monroe started kiteboarding at 13. When she was 17, she moved to Cabarete, Dominican Republic, where she could practice her sport (and finish school online).

"I spent last summer kiting in Cabarete. I love it there and was able to kite almost everyday. I decided to finish my last semester online so I could move back to Cabarete," she explained to The Kiteboarder in 2011. "All my friends think I should wait because senior year in high school is the most fun...for me kiting is what I want to do and there is no better place to live then Cabarete."

She's most known for her work in horror films.

Maika's first film was the 2012 thriller At Any Price, which also starred Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron. She later became known as a "scream queen" after starring in movies like The Guest and It Follows.

Maika suggested that people love horror films because of how they make them feel. As she told Glamour, "I mean, I just remember as a kid there's something so much fun about [being scared]. I think the reason why people go to the movies is to feel something, and feeling terrified is a feeling that most people hopefully won't feel otherwise. It's a fun thing to experience for an hour and a half, two hours in a movie theater."

Monroe and Keery made their debut as a couple on the Stranger Things red carpet.

Monroe will appear in a number of upcoming films.

2019 has already been pretty busy for Monroe, and she shows no signs of slowing down. So far this year she's appeared in the psychological film Greta, the Shia LaBeouf autobiographical film Honey Boy, and the dark comedy Villains.

Monroe's next film will be The Education of Fredrick Fitzell, which is set to be released later this year. The thriller follows a man going through an existential crisis as he ventures into his past. Then she'll star in The Sound of Philadelphia, in which a "grieving brother turns to his family's criminal connections to seek revenge against the person who killed his sister." The actress is also slated for a part in Stockholm, which tells the story of a bank robber that falls for one of his hostages.
