Maggie Rogers Spoke Out Against Harassment After a Man Told Her to Take Her Top Off on Stage

"I want to use this moment to be very very clear."

Singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers is speaking out against "harassment, disrespect, [and] degradation" after two men yelled demeaning things at her while she was performing. And she's making it clear that behavior isn't welcome at her shows.

On Sunday, October 20, the Teen Vogue cover star shared a note on social media that recounted what happened. According to the singer, she was performing an acoustic encore of her song "Alaska," which includes a moment for her to share a personal speech on gratitude and growth. As she spoke, one man in the audience shouted for the singer to take her top off, and then another chimed in, saying, "You cute though."

The singer admitted that she was "stunned. furious. fuming." and "confused." "I step on stage every night and give every part of me," she wrote. "And my community shows up every night and together, we create a safe space to amplify each other. To allow relief. To allow release. There's a deep amount of trust there."

She continued, noting that similar behavior will not be allowed at her performances. "I want to use this moment to be very very clear," she wrote. "There is no space for harassment or disrespect or degradation of any kind at my show." She closed the note with an instruction for readers to "be kind to each other out there."

Many fans and friends of the singer have since shared their support. Artists including Cat Power and Sofi Tukker shared heart emojis, while fans expressed their disgust. "Thank you for always enforcing that your shows are a safe space for all people," one person wrote. "You shouldn't even have to say this." Another fan also called out the audience members, writing, "You truly make a connection with your audience. To have someone ruin it in the worst way possible is unthinkable. Those people should be embarrassed and ashamed for ruining one of the most honest environments that any artist has ever made."
